My cruiser is pretty reliable, it has only not started for me once due to mechanical problems, but recently I have had to coax her to start. There has been a weird problem when I have tried to start her when she is cold (under 50 F). Several times I have tried to start her and she comes to life only to quickly die like she is running out of gas. There are two ways I have relieved the problem: 1) To push in the choke almost all the way and see if she will start, but when this does work it requires the engine to run at around 500 rpms or lower 2) The more common way(and the weird way), I move the cruiser to where she is on an incline -and she starts right up. I have been on even ground and moved the cruiser to a very very slight incline with the front end facing down and this alleviates the problem almost right away. (?!) So, needless to say, I am confused and irritated since this is my DD. If you guys could give me some of that cruiser wisdom I would sure appreciate it.

It seems that LC owners are a tight group, but I personally have not received that warmth. I have seen other people with higher post counts get multiple responses and even other newbies get responses, but as of right now thirtysomething views and no posts...?

I feel ya but dont know what to tell you. Next time just bump it to the top for a few days and see what you get.

Have you checked anything on it? How is the carb, has it ever been rebuilt? Wish I could help more but I have a 62 and no carb/chocke issues.

Easy bud, It sounds like your problem has something to do with the carb. Not every one is real savy about carb issues. I being one of them. Wait for one of the carb gurus (sp) to read your post. Their really good at giving good advise.

Are you pumping the throttle once and then pulling the choke lever all the way out when starting? Where is your fuel level at? Can you see it in the sight window?

I have suspected the carb before, but I don't have the knowledge to determine what exactly would be wrong. I usually start it without any pumping of the throttle, but when it is cold and it doesn't start the first time I will pump it, my fuel level is around half a tank but for my vehicle that means around 1/3 of a tank. And yes I almost always begin the starting procedure with pulling the choke out teh whole way.
Another weird thing about it is, if I don't let it warm up all the way (temp guage in the middle) before I drive it any length, then later on it is much much more likely to start hesitating and stalling out if I am driving up a hill. Thanks for replying

This is a rather unusual one. For starters I would definately put in a new fuel filter, then check the level of gas in the carb while the vehicle is on level ground. The carb has a little window on the front of it, there should be gas about midway up the window. It may be time to rebuild the carb. Also, has the fuel tank been replaced per the recall? Another possibility is a faulty fuel pump but I don't see how changing the incline of the truck would effect this. I'll let you know if I think of anything else. HTH.

could also be maybe a weak fuel pump?
and trust me if noones answering after all those views its becuase they just dont know what to say to you. not because your new. we love new people in here as far as i can always tell. soon someone who knows more will be along. its just sat. night so it slow

It would help to know what year and how many miles.

Just off the top of my head, I'm going to say:

Fuel filter

Fuel pump

Bad gas (water in the fuel)

Fuel tank or lines have too much gunk in them

How long have u owned said FJ60? Is ignition original? Any engine modifications?

...

Nothing better than cruiser porn.:grinpimp: I like the dirty/muddy ones.:D

Wow, there are a lot of questions to go through.
My cruiser is an '87 with stock engine components. I have owned it for just about a year now. I don't know if the recall work has been done, the cruiser is in good shape and looks to have been well taken care of, so if I had to guess I would asssume that it had been done.
I have somewhat recently ran it out of gas, and was told (by someone who may or may not have any idea what he was talking baout) that Toyota's are notorious for having the fuel pump go out on them if that happens. Is that true? If so, then I will probably go that route after I do the cheap stuff like the fuel filter. Thanks for helping me out guys.https://forum.ih8mud.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
:)
Will work on pics, but I only have a film camera so I would have to snap, develop, and scan before I can upload.
