I'm having a weird problem with my LJ70 Land Cruiser 2.4TD running on BIODIESEL.

Last week I started getting power loss when going up hills @ around 3000rpm. The it would not rev past 3000rpm even when stationary. I replaced the main filter and the clear inline one I have before the main filter, used some injector cleaner and all appeared ok. The power was instantly back and it was away no problems
at all.

The problem has now returned when I'm heavily accelerating up a hill the power loss is instant. One thing I have noticed from the inline
filter is there is bubbles coming from the fuel lines which go back to the tank. I removed the inline filter suspecting that might be at fault as the main
filter is also brand new (4 days old) and the power is back to normal, but I'm not entirely convinced.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking maybe its the fuel pickup pipe? As the bubbles are entering the filter. Just clutching at straws as all appears ok for now. Will give it a good blast out again tomorrow
to try and replicate.

Connect a separate fuel supply from a small container and fix it to the engine bay and try that.
This will isolate the problem from the fuel injection system and the fuel supply.

If you have bubbles coming from the tank ,you may have rust around the fuel pick up where it enters the tank. Its a common problem.
You can check by lifting the carpet in the rear and removing the acces plate. This will allow you to inspect it from th top without dropping the tank.

One of the more common places to find leaks in these vehicles is at the bottom of the fuel filter / water separator canister - where the drain plug goes in and there's an O-ring over the drain plug screw.

However, it would seem that your problem is further back in the system...

The one issue that we find with a very few biodiesel and veggie oils systems is the fuel lines rotting or getting very, very soft and then losing their integrity. Check the fuel lines carefully for leaks in the tubing and at connections.

It would probably be worth seeing if there's any obstruction in the fuel lines since if the lift pump (built in to the injection pump) is having to "suck" the fuel through, then it's not going to last very long at all as it will wear out rapidly. You can try either seeing if there is good flow through, or you can force the diesel back through the system and in to the tank using some compressed air (just make sure your fuel cap is off and your tank is not overly full first).

The other place to check for obstruction or plugging is the fuel pick up screen in the tank. You will have to remove the fuel pick up to do this. Some Land Cruisers you can access this via small hatch, and with others you will have to remove the tank.

Fuelling Problem

Well I now plan to renew the fuel lines underneath the car, I have ordered a pickup pipe which goes into the tank. Before I go to the hassle of dropping the tank I'm going to try and get my hands to the pickup pipe and smear a sealant to try and seal the corroded pipe.

I did notice that the small piece of flexy rubber that comes from th pick up pipe to the fuel line looked a little perished, I will replace that too.

Does anyone know the correct ID's for the fuel lines that run under the car? The flow is considerably thicker than the return but at the fuel housing they are both the same.

Has anyone experience of dropping the tank? How did it go?
