Weird a/c problem in '95 L.C.

My problems seem similar to those of mjulaw (post date 5/26/06) except that my a/c does not consistently work when I am moving, and not work when I am still.

Here are the symptons:

a/c works intermittently. When it works, it blows very cold air (low 40's). When it is not working, it blows only outside air, however the compressor is still running. It seems that it is more likely to not work when the temp in the engine compartment is high due to high outside temps, or warm engine or both.

I put the gauges on it the other day. When I ran cold water over the condensor, the pressures came to right where they should be. So I replaced the fan clutch to increase air flow. However, I still have the problem.

I will clean the condensor and radiator with simple green as some have suggested.

Any other thoughts on what the problem might be?

Replacing the receiver drier/filter drier probably wouldn't hurt. And at eleven years old, and 100k miles, it seems reasonable to think there may be some moisture or debris in the system.

However, the unique thing about my problem in comparison from the link you cited is that my a/c does not fizzle out. In other words, it does not start out cold and gradually get less cool. It is all or nothing. Yet when there is nothing, the compressor is still running.

Good point. I wonder how he diagnosed that (the ice in the lines) anyway??

My thinking was that your pouring water on the condensor unfroze the lines, thus putting things back as they should be. Just a guess though...
