I searched the forums for this answer, couldn't find it.

I want to take the spare off my OEM carrier, and use the 3 bolts to make a Jerry can holder.

What would be the limit and do you think it could hold 2 or 3 cans?

Has anyone done this instead of buying an aftermarket from a vendor?

What OEM tire carrier do you have? My OEM spare tire carrier was a chain under the truck, 12" off the ground. Not a jerry can locale for me.

Spare 33" tire and wheel is what? 75# maybe? Liquids are 8# per gallon. Three 5 gal cans puts you at (8x5x3) so roughly 120# give or take for the can. The stock OEM under carrier could hold that easily.

I've seen a couple builds on here where guys built a swing down rack in that location. Held 2 cans I believe. Sweet set-up, but I don't want to have to crawl under my cruiser to grab fuel or water.

I'm guessing you are referring to the factory rear swing-out. I have had a 34" Toyo MT on mine for a few years without any noticeable ill effects and that is a very heavy tire.

If your talking about a rear swing out then I was mistaken. The basket I've seen is under the rear, like where the spare on my 91 hangs!

Sorry all,

Yes, I was speaking about the rear swing out. I do not want to take off the carrier since it will have those nasty gaps on the side of the truck. I figured id get a 4x4lab bumper with spare tire on the right, and use the OEM tire carrier as a jerry can holder.

What is the maximum weight it would carry?

Plus the weight of the actual metal holder?
