hi-

Building a barn, anyone know of a source for free or cheap used utility poles? I'll need 21 in the 14' to 18' range...

Thanks,

harry

I've hear of a pole barn but isn't that going a little bit overboard. I guess you won't have to worry about hurricanes. You have to post pics once you start building it.

Call your local utility company. They are always replacing poles. I work for one in CT and the used poles end up at some recycling plant.

Finding decent poles that long (that I would build a building around) is going to be tough. Usually I can get the cut off pieces but they are only 6-8ft long, of new poles that have been installed then 'trimmed' to fit. What about getting some rough cut beams and then coating the heck out of the end that will go in the ground with preservative.

My friend built a barn with telephone poles, It was a challenge to get them straight and plum we had to use a excavator to hold them as they were heavy sobs. They had to be notched with a chainsaw on the inside to put microlams around the tops of the poles because they vary in there diameter and to keep the outside of the poles plum. We also drilled the poles and the microlams to put 1/2 carrage bolts thru them.Once the tops where all done we went around the center of the poles and tied them together with 2x8s the same way notching with a chainsaw. Then we braced the whole mess and my friend had the poles concreted in place and then the floor. There were 19 poles all together and it was a ton of work. The poles stink when you cut them and it eats the chain. But when it was done it was a brick.
