Water Purification System

I have been following a thread over on the Canada Overland forum and there was a discussion on water purification systems. The Katadyne is the usual obvious choice, but it is usually a system for back packers, or should I say generally smaller volumes. It gets to be a bit of a challenge with a base camp and 4 or more people using water up all day. So this Sawyer System came up. I'm quite amazed,
very easy to use ( gravity system ) no chemicals, and reusable and long lasting filter.
Can't really ask for more. It is also available almost everywhere, at a reasonable price.

Yeah, I've been using a sawyer filter unit for a few years to fill a water bladder or other tanks when camping in the oz bush. Don't need the super fine filter in the oz bush, so I'm using their 0.1um unit. I found the connectors they use (after a bunch of searching), available from USP in the US.

Anyhow, more info on my use and connector part numbers below. This writeup was prior to moving to an internal vehicle bladder with 70L capacity.

Yeah, I've been using a sawyer filter unit for a few years to fill a water bladder or other tanks when camping in the oz bush. Don't need the super fine filter in the oz bush, so I'm using their 0.1um unit. I found the connectors they use (after a bunch of searching), available from USP in the US.

I've followed your bush trips for a while... Great stuff!! Your mod documentation is great as well!!

Peter (@Bambi Girl ) sent me Len Beadell's first book (Too Long in the Bush) - great book and what adventure!! We've joked a bit about driving the Gunbarrel Highway...

I would have liked to make an oz bush trip one day, but I'm old enough to spend the rest of my days exploring The Great Basin and surrounding mountain ranges, of Nevada and Utah.

Yeah, Len's books are pretty entertaining. Poor bastard doing it all in a landrover too Hopefully his kids appreciated that a bunch of the 'roads' out there are named after them. It's some fairly remote country and fuel capacity/range and vehicle reliability is mighty important

Water is obviously very scarce in the central oz bush, so we often don't have the benefit of passing it up in the hope of find 'better quality' elsewhere. Anything that looks clear and doesn't smell is a good candidate for filtering and storing. Though in reality most of the water usage is generally washing up cooking gear, so we tend to be very frugal in that use. It's always a major celebration of cleaning and having a shower when we come to a decent water hole etc.

I contacted MMI Marine for current pricing and availability on the Whale 1352 pump. This is his response: "The GP1352 has been replaced by the High Flow Series pump GP1652".

The Whale spec sheet still shows the 1352, so maybe he simply is not carrying the premium and has gone to the high flow. Good prices still.

Thanks for the update. Just checked and yes, fantastic price on GP1652. May just need to buy it as a spare

They are a great pump to just drop into a water source directly and reasonably low current draw.
