hey guys: first post outside the '40 series'. my wife drives an '02 4runner. the other morning when she started it, the 'check engine', 'vsc trac', vsc off' lights came on and stayed on. does anyone know what this means. is it a fix i can do or does it require a dealer/mechanic? vehicle has been driven for two days with no problems. i've got a diagnostic scheduled for wed., but since ive gotten so many answers in the '40' section i figured i'd see if any of you have a solution. any help is appreciated. -CW

When the CEL trips, the VSC and TRAC will both go on as default. Get the code pulled on the CEL. I'm 99% sure that it's the O2 sensor. How many miles on your 4Runner? My brother's O2 sensors went out at 110k miles.

the truck has @78k-79k on it. so the vsc trak light doesn't mean its a vsc trak problem. can i get that code pulled at an autozone? thanks for the info.

I was talking to a buddy and he said there is a "diagnostic sequence"? something to do with turning ignition and the odometer displays a code. any truth to this? p nut... you there dude?

I've never heard that before (which doesn't mean its not true). I've always taken my cars to AutoZone to get the code read. They'll usually translate it for you, and in many cases recommend an action.

On my Honda's, you could jump some wires to get the code. It will display a numerical value (usually by counting how many times the CEL light blinks), then you have to look that up. Unfortunately, I don't have the procedures to do this on a 4Runner, nor the list of codes.

It's much easier to just get Autozone or Checkers to pull it.

I had a problem with my 02 Tundra after the memory in the I-force computer failed - drained battery. My mechanic cycled the ignition switch 8 times and everything defaulted back to the factory settings.

Hope this helps you out.

Hey Toyota Corporate has extended the 02 sensor TSB and i would call and ask them exactly what it is cause they claim they will reimburse you if ya have reciepts or if you are still having problems i think they went for 3/36 to 8/80 but call Corporate and ask, could get some money back and if you are having issues they could get fixed since Toyota has known of this problem which is kinda like the Ball Joint problem. They are not going away and they have to fix them and will but ya gotta check with Corporate, most dealerships will claim amnesia on ya unless they know you have called Corporate!
