I got a XD9000I on my Cruiser, so far a real nice Winch...........
The only Bummer is that lousy little Screw that holds the Rope ........

The Screw is still in order but the Rope came off the second time now and i would like to know if there is a way to fix that proper.
I fixed it today with a clamp but that will come off again i guess.

Would it be possible to drill a hole in the drum ?? ???

The Rope was put on there under tension and the first 8 layers were even secured with ductape before it came off.......
 
Take the cable to a rigging shop and have new terminal crimped on. Or get a new cable with terminal. Or buy your own heavy duty crimper and crimp a new terminal on yourself.
 
YOu should never unwrap your winch past the last full spool anyway. I have been running synthetic rope for 2 years now and it is not even secured to the drum. Only laid down under the last wrap.

I have never had any problem.

The last 6 or seven wraps...the last full layer, should stay on the drum...even when you REALLY need it...get an extra set length of chain or use a tow strap to get the extra length.

What Nolen said!!


The end of the rope is fastened to the drum just to aid the cable into spooling on the drum, it will take NO load. Like Nolen said, the muliple wraps of cable/rope are what gives it the friction needed to pull a load with it.

Cross the cable/rope under itself...remove that screw tab and "X" it on the drum prior to rescrewing...it will tighten itself down...

AND you should never get to the final 10-15 wraps anyways.....(pretty much the 1st layer....)

How or even better why in the hell do you 'secure' wire rope to a drum with ductape?

Duct tape

It's not for any kind of load-holding purpose.

Where I wheel (Pacific NW), there are trees (or at least stumps) everywhere. I have never needed to pull more than about 40' of rope to get to a suitable anchor. A lot of people wrap a layer of duct tape around the rope after the first few layers just to keep them from moving around. Less rope to re-spool and bunch up if you end up doing multiple pulls. Some call me anal - I prefer tidy...

Of course, I could just run the drum half-empty and get a higher pulling capacity, but then what's the point in having a winch that'll hold 150 feet? :D
