Does anyone know much about the Warn 8074, what years were they made, how good were they, etc.? I found a supposedly working one for a pretty cheap price, and from what I've read it seems almost identical to an 8274 except it doesn't have a freespool option, only power in/out. I can't imagine it would be much a problem for me, but I don't have much experience with winches, I'm not sure if I'm maybe I'm overlooking something important. Also, are parts mostly interchangable with the 8274, in case something needs to be serviced?

Thanks

I have one on my 70. It's the same as an 8274 minus the free spool. Supposedly the 2 stands for 2 ways to spool. Anyway they came either dealer installed or stock on jeeps ~76-78? because that's what AMC (jeep) wanted.

I have an 8274 on my 40 too and I hardly ever use the free spool option. It's just too hard to free spool more than a few feet out. So not having that option on my 70 doesn't bother me.

8- 8000 lb winch

2- two direction power

74- year it was made

The non-freespool winches were sold by AMC on Jeeps as an add on dealer option...My uncle purchased his J20 with one back in 1977, and I know another guy that purchased a CJ-7 and still has it on his truck.

You can change the top piece out with one that has the free spool option....

Same service parts as the 8274 of the same era.

I really can't remember from talking to warn but if there was 2 ways to power why would they name it 8074?

IIRC, it was not sold to the public like that, it was a set up that they made for AMC...

Thanks for the info guys, but I was too late. I found it on craigslist for $100, and e-mailed them right away to tell them I wanted to buy it, but someone picked it up before I could get it.
The only problem was that it was welded to some sort of hoist fixture (not a bumper), not sure how or why, but I would've had to cut it away. I keep telling myself that it was in probably crappy shape, that'll at least make me feel a little better for missing out on this deal. Gotta keep looking.
