I recently mounted a new M8000 on my ARB bumper. I used hardened spacers and the winch mounts fine. I have one problem though. I went with the black WARN Hawse Fairlead and the bumper hole that feeds the cable through the fairlead has exposed steel (about 1/4 inch) above the bottom of the fairlead. So the potential for the cable rubbing and fraying is pretty high.

Has anyone seen this before?

As a potential fix, I was considering grinding down the exposed bumper. Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

Are you using a steel cable with an aluminum Hawse fairlead?

I am using a steel cable with a cast iron (i think) hawse. It is a WARN and it rated for both steel and synthetic.

If you look on the WARN website you will see it - the black one.

Just so we're clear on this, can you post a pic of your bumper & mounted winch? You do have the ARB winch bumper, right? IIRC, the ARB winch bumper is designed to use the roller fair lead. The hawse will work, but you might have to re-drill the fair lead mounting holes to center the hawse in the bumper hole. The bumper hole is much larger than the hawse hole, so I'm not clear on what is causing your problem. In the pic below, you'll notice 2 fair lead holes. My roller fair lead is mounted in the bottom bumper hole.

As one last tip, you'll want to sight through the hawse hole when it's mounted so the bottom wrap of the winch is centered in the hole (top to bottom). This will give as little resistance as possible to the cable as it feeds out or in. Also keep in mind, the bottom 2 winch mounting bolts usually double as fair lead mounting bolts. The winch in the pic is a Ramsey planetary 8K and has been replaced by a HF Badland planetary 12K. But the fair lead mount was the same for it, so I would assume that most planetary winches, including a Warn, would follow the same standard.

Gotcha. I wanted to make sure you weren't using an aluminum Hawse (more common than steel Hawse) with a steel cable.

As far as the exposed steel from your bumper do you have a pic? You want your cable to run across your Hawse or rollers, not your bumper. That's the reason for having the fairlead.

Hi All:

Sorry, but this is not your major problem.

The big problem is choosing an electric winch that is not up to the task.

The Warn M8000 is fine for a 40 or 70 Series, but for a wagon or pick-up (45/55/75/60/80 Series) a heavier-rated electric winch is a better idea.

For your 80 series I'd want to fit at a minimum a 10K winch, if not a 12K model. Your ARB bull bar will fit either of these winches.

Just my opinion.

Regards,

Alan

Good point! You can use a snatch block to help, but the bigger winches are so much more capable. I noticed a difference immediately going from an 8K to a 12K on my 80. The biggest being that I dont have to spool out to the 1st wrap to have some power, now.
