So was able to pick up this 5687 very cheap recently, will be putting it on my FJ60. Unit was is good shape for its age, no damage to the case or spool so I jumped on it. Also had most of the parts for the brake which was a plus, the missing/broken items I'll grab from Herm. Opened up the case and there was some water in it, must not have been in there long cause the corrosion was very minimal. Have been able to clean it up, replace all the bearings and bushings, and paint the spool. Still trying to decide if I want to have the original motor rebuilt or upgrade to a two way motor (I saw the recent post on here about it but its only like 2.5hp if I remember). Either way here are some pics!

I just picked one of these up myself. I tore it down last night. Looks like all ill need are new bushing and a case gasket. Did yours have the seals between the case bushing and the drum? I have seen the reference to these seals in the other threads but mine did not have seals, only bushings.

These are awesome winches. I have a couple of these plus an 8274.

Nothing against the 8274 at all, I love them, but the 5687 is a better built winch compared to the 8274.

The 5687 was designed and built by machinists @ Bellview. The 8274 was designed by accountants @ Warn.

The reason the 8274 has thin castings and splits horizontally is because that was the biggest die casting machine Warn could afford back then. They went to die casting the housing to cut the cost way down and speed production. You can only sand cast so fast.

A real neat winch is the Warn 8200. It's same function as a 8274, but with the stronger cast housing and better freespool mechanism of the 5687.

I make an adapter plate that fits the 5687 to use any newer 20 spline winch motor. It uses the 8274 pinion gear. I want to make all the parts so a guy can build any 5687 into an 8200. They all need motor and brake work anyway. Might as well add some functionality while you're sprucing it up.

I saw those referenced and didnt have them either, since this winch that long without them I decided to do just the bushings like before.

Where do you sell the adapter? Would love to grab one of those cause I brought the motor to my local guy and he said it was beyond repair, so going to go with a 9.5 I think.
