Anyone have experience running 255/85/16 tires on stock 70 series steel 16 x 6" rims?

Most tire manufacturers state 6.5" as the minimum rim width.

Any experience would be helpful. I have heard some tire shops won't mount the tires on rims not in the recommended width range.

Thanks in advance.

Anyone have any experience running 255/85/16 on any 6" wide rim?

The tire it self will surely fit, but yes you are right manufacture recommends at least 6.5j. Having 6j rims will make the tire round looking not wide.

It'll work fine. If not, you can convert the wheels to beadlocks! ;)

I ran wheels that were 0.5" narrower than the recommended and tire wear was fine.

I have 16x6 70 series rims and 255/85R16 was my ideal tire size. I ended up going 235/85/R16 because of my concerns with the narrow rim width. I still want the bigger tire though. When I wear through my 235's I'm going to go to a 16x7 rim and get the 255's. Anyhow, If you end up running 255's on the 6" wide rim, I'll be interested to hear how it works out for you.

You should check out https://forum.ih8mud.com/forums/ca-bc-vancouver-island-cruisers.104/ We usually have meetings once a month, would be good have you out if you are interested.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I have the same concern. I was thinking the 16x7 would be ideal but am having a hard time finding a decent rim that would fit without spacers. Thanks for the heads up on the VI cruisers. I have been wanting to get out to a meeting for quite some time. Would be great to meet all of you. Hopefully this month works for me.

Cheers

Thanks for the heads up, a little too bling for what I am looking for. Hoping to find some steelies, if I can't I might order some "vintiques" from summit. Unless you want to sell your 70 series steelies??:D

Thanks for the reply. What rim size are you running them on?

I have 8 inch wide rims on my 77.
My dad has a set of LJ78 Prado 16x7s like this.
I have the exact tire as my winters as GTSSportCoup's rig seen here.

My dad is planning on running 255s on his HZJ73 with these wheels
Toyo says 6.5-8 inch wide is approved. I'd run em.

Plus I have found 3 sets now at the price of $100-150 bucks for a full set of 4-5...
They are around.

Great looking truck.I have been looking without much luck for a few months now, hopefully something comes up soon. I should have been more clear about the rim size I was wanting to run them on. The stock 70 series steel rim I was looking at getting from toyota is a16x6" wheel. Not within the manufacturers recommended rim width.

My dad has those wheels for his winters and he is running 235/85/15s with no issues.
They look pretty normal if you ask me.

So you figure a 255/85/16 would be ok on a 6" rim? It is only .5" below what they recommend.

ForealBoreal,
I checked out your build page. I have to say that what you have done is nothing short of unbelievable. Your maintenance program and attention to detail is what the rest of us strive to achieve. Fantastic documentation of your build up. Thank you for sharing, greatly appreciated.

Man I am a year behind in maintenance. I have parts I have been waiting to install a year ago that will be happening this month.

Life gets in the way of important things like truck maintenance.. it is easy to get behind. Good luck with the new parts install.

I will be looking forward to it!
