Guys,

interested in a 4x4 crew cab P/U truck... I don't know much about the tundra lineup, are there any years I should avoid? Certain things to insist on?

Basically i need a 4x4 which can fit my family, and has the power to haul jetskis (3500 lbs with trailer) plus an enclosed car carrier that holds a 3500lb vehicle. Am I barking up the right tree here? Budget hoping to keep under 15k, if realistic.

thanks. gerry

The lowest mile '05 or '06 double cab you can afford, they had about 40 more horses and the other bugs worked out.

Find one at around 100k-110k that's the sweet spot for your price range if the 90k has been done and is well maintained. The 4.7 is a great motor and will go 300k plus if you treat it right.

Good truck, I liked mine.

I agree 100%. Double cab will have room for the family and the 4.7 is one of the best powerplants Toyota ever built. Gas mileage isn't great but it never is in a 4WD V8 truck. The 05-06 has the VVT-i engine which is just a better updated version of the 4.7.

The 05-06 also has the newer A750 5 speed transmission, vs the earlier 4 speed.

Whenever you can get a VIN for a specific truck youre looking at, go to Toyota.com and sign up as an Owner, and put in the VIN...You can lookup (supposedly) all the service records from any service ever performed at any Toyota dealership.

It only shows Toyota dealers. You can run a carfax and it will show all maintenance records (for everyone that reports).

Guys, thanks for the info.

A bit more info if you don't mind. How easily will the 05/06 pull say, 6000 or 7000 lbs? and was there a different set of trim levels, or is it all individual options. I see SR5 but don't really know what that entails.

thanks again.

Three trim levels available for 05-06.

Deluxe: Basically a bare bones vehicle
SR5: Mid-grade convenience and sport package
Limited: The one with all the comfort goodies

Note that there were options available for all three packages, and some options may/may not overlap packages.
So basically, all SR5 or Limiteds may not be exactly the same just because of the trim level.

Of course being the mid-grade package, SR5s are WAY more plentiful than the other two.

Heres the factory brochures:

Depends on the setup. I believe the V8s are 6500-7000 tow capacity. That's total weight including trailer and cargo. I know people exceed it frequently but I wouldn't recommend it.

Oh, some have actual tow packages also....I think mine does.

I think the tow package included:
-Tow receiver
-higher amp alternator
-external tranny cooler in addition to the internal radiator cooler
-trailer light harness

Not sure if it included anything else.

Dont quote me on this though, I havent really researched it very well yet. (I dont tow)
