Voltage Regulator

Hello All,

This is my first post here at IH8MUD. I've been visiting these forums on and off for a little while now getting tips from other peoples expieriences with their FJ's.

I finally decided to register and post because I can't seem to find this one bit of information.

WHERE THE HELL IS THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR LOCATED ON MY 1982 FJ60????

The manual shows it linked to the coil on the passenger side fender area. But there is nothing. Did I get the wrong part? Is the regulator internal in the alternator?

Now, I had better tell you all what brought this on.

I had replaced my starter and for a few days everything was hunky dory! But then I started to notice that my voltage meter was all over the place. At first I thought maybe I didn't ground the starter properly but after checking the ground seems to be fine. I tested my battery and it is also fine. The ebrake light is constantly on now and the charge battery light comes on occasionally. Pretty much only at idle and when starting from a stop. If I let the truck sit for to long I have to get it jumped. So in my efforts to narrow things down I went ahead and bought what I thought was the voltage regulaor for this truck but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Any help would be appreciated.

i have an 83 and my VR is internal....the VR is located on the top of the alternator....little box with two screws on the top and two screws on the back side....VR pulls out of the pin connectors

dont know where a external VR would be located

Do you have the manual for your vehicle? If you do look it up. It shows and external regulator near the coil on the passger side fender/wheel well area.

And thanks for the info, I'll go see if the local shop has in internal regulator for my alternator.

Is a 3rd party manual like Haynes?

I had VR (mine is the box on top of the alternator) problems with my '84. After two alternators and two VR's I decided to do the GM alternator swap. I think I still have a VR I special ordered from Autozone and never installed it. If you r interested.

1984 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER Voltage Regulator

Here you can see a picture of each kind. I bet you have an internal one. I changed mine in a few minutes. Just make sure you take the battery cables loose.
