Over the past few weeks I have been plagued with a vibration on my TLC. I had an OME kit (2.5” lift) with castor correction kit fitted which I drove around with in city traffic for 500km. At around 300km I went to play in the dunes where I heard the birfields complaint big time. I had some people with me and had to go and drop them off. I ended up driving around 20km with tyres sitting at 1 bar on a tarred road. (Silly me for doing this)
The very next day the birfields were fitted and for the first time I realized that there is a slight vibration at 80km and a rumble from 110km/h onward with it been most pronounced at 130km/h all the way up. There was also a rrrrrrrrrrrr sound at times while traveling on the highways bit only occationally.
I took the vehicle to my mechanic to have it checked out and the bearings were confirmed to be fine. The wheel alignment was done and the toe was found to be out. The wheels were balanced. The problem persisted. The wheels were rotated straight to the back but did not help. I then cross rotated it. Problem persisted.
We then placed the vehicle on its axles (wheels in the air) where we listened with a stetscope to the drive train bearings etc while driving the wheels to around 130km/h. The front diff was very quiet and the normal noises were heard from the tranny. One could feel that the whole vehicle is vibrating by just holding the frame. The spline yoke was found to be fine and we decided to have both props balanced. The u-joints were checked out and found to be fine. After that the vehicle was quite on the stand and no vibration was observed.
There were no more rumbles on the higher speeds but the rrrrrrrrrrrrrr at 80 to 82km/h remained. I also noticed that rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr sound would still occur. The tyres I got with the vehicle and they only did 4000km. They are Dunlop Grantreks 275x70R16. I had a look at the tyres and edges shows heel and toe wear on the edges. I think this might also be called feathering but I might be mistaken. If one moved your fingers over the problem area it almost feels as if one’s hand gets stuck on the raised edges of the heel and toe wear area.
I think that the combination of wrong toe and me driving on the tar at 1bar for 20km must have caused the visible damaged and is now causing the occasional rrrrrrrrrrrrr sound at speed. I am right to assume this is a tyre problem?
Please help….
