Selling my 78 FJ40- a very solid and strong running truck. It has 99K miles on it and looks it. The previous owner did a lot of work to this truck and invested a lot of money in it, and it shows by its looks and performance. Ask anyone who has seen and/or ridden in it- John Merkey, Jeff Dozier, Matt Reed- to see how nice this 40 is.

The body is in excellent condition, right now the top is off and it sports a real nice bikini top. No rust anywhere on the tub and the frame is excellent. Fenders were new OEM Toyota, only rust I see is one bubble on the very bottom of the bib. No rust showing there, just bubbled a bit. Color is olive (original color of course but repainted)and it is a real good, but not perfect paint job. From five feet away it looks perfect. Grille surround is white of course. Interior has been rhino lined and tinted to the same color as the body. Very well done.

Interior is very nice, jumpseats are perfect. Driver seat could use new vinyl upholstery but the front seats have very nice leather-like covers on them that look very good and are comfortable. Shoulder belts for front seats work fine. Dashboard exceptionally clean and sports an original radio in the proper place. Steering wheel is nice and all dash pads are very nice. Full original rollbar with padding. Has a gray Tuffy console between the seats and in it sits a Pioneer Supertuner that plays very well. Two speakers sit in enclosures in the cargo area. Tool set is under the seat as is an original jack, and the long jack tools sit behind the passenger jump seat in original clips. All glass is good. Visors are very nice. Looks like it has a complete Specter carpet kit that is like new.

All lights and accessories work fine, including all gauges (except the gas gauge). Speedometer/odometer work great. High beams/lo beams, turn signals all good, as are wipers in both speed positions. Heater works, and rear heater is there but not hooked up electrically at this time. I never looked at why it isn't cause I never needed it. Horns work as expected.

Drivetrain is extremely strong, this is the peppiest land cruiser I have ever driven. It's a 78 with the good fine spline third members with 4.10 gears, the transmission, transfer case, and clutch work flawlessly, in both 2WD and 4WD. Engine extremely strong, has a Weber carb and a header. Exhaust system tight and has a great throaty sound. Engine uses no oil and has no leaks that I can see, neither oil nor coolant. Transfer case has a very small drip (Ihaven't had to add in a year of ownership). Engine never runs hot, battery charges fine and this truck starts every time with one turn of the key, no matter what the temperature is. Has an Optima red top battery and is very clean under the hood (and everywhere else I might add). Belts and hose in excellent shape. Being a 78 this has the good pointless electronic distributor. Windshield washers do not work.

Tires are stock size 225/75-15 radials with excellent tread mounted on stock rims, previous owner bought these rims new from Toyota (five of them) and also bought new OEM hubcaps at the same time. Truck handles very well, steering is perfect (not power assisted) and truck goes down the road straight with no wander, rattles or vibrations. This is a fine example of the FJ40 series. The front bumper was also bought new at the Toyota dealer and is perfect. Rear bumpers are stock and nice shape.

A soft top in excellent shape comes with the truck, I have the canvas top itself but haven't got the framework from the PO- but I can and will get it for whomever buys the 40 from me. There is also a full hardtop for the truck with four doors. The color of the hardtop sides and doors is very slightly different than that on the tub and main body- hardly noticeable until brought to your attention. The previous owner never remounted the top after doing the bodywork and new paint and never noticed the slight difference. I did because when I bought the truck I installed the top and doors.

The hardtop fits perfectly and there were absolutely no rattles or leaks anywhere with the top and doors installed. The top itself is very nice, shiny white paint but the drip rail paint needs touched up. Headliner very nice original. Doors fit absolutely perfectly, open, close, and latch as they should, and of course all glass in them is fine. Front doors have speakers in them that are easily re-hooked up when doors are installed. The doors have some rust bubbles starting at the bottom, especially the ambulance doors, but no rust or rust-through is showing. Door panels are OK, same key locks front doors and ignition. I have all the correct weatherstripping in excellent condition to remount the top. The insides of the ambulance doors are scratched up, and there is a scratch or two on the outside of the front doors. I also have all the proper hardware to re-install the hardtop and there are no broken bolts or holes with bad threads- all fasteners came out and will go back in as they were intended. Inside rear view mirror is nice and the interior courtesy light on the driver door pillar works (as good as it did when new for what that's worth!!!). Outside mirrors are mounted on the windshield hinges. Original spare tire carrier is complete, rattle-free, and in good shape. License plate light and holder in good shape although currently it has only one of the two lights in place- I'm looking for a good second light.

If you're in the market for a very solid, basically unmolested 78 (best year!!!) FJ40 this might be the one. If you drive it you'll buy it. If you see it you'll like it. I believe it is a very good buy at $11,000. Of course I have a clear PA title in my name. Located in northeastern PA not far from Rausch Creek offroad park. Email me at home and I will send you pictures- home email is shmukter@pa.metrocast.net, work email is GSCHMAUCH@cartech.com. I just sold a very nice FJ60 and yesterday took delivery of the BJ70 I have always yearned for. I'm keeping the 70 and of course won't part with my 55, but the 40 has to go and I am sure the new owner will love it. It runs great, sounds great, looks awesome and turns heads everywhere you drive it. This is a turn-key purchase, buy it and drive it. You can call me between 5PM and 8PM at 570-668-2489, work phone is 610-208-3792. Shmukster
