I have a near-pristine roof for a removable-top FJ45 pick up. This roof is straight with no dents and almost no rust damage. There were two small areas of rust damage on the front corners, but those have been repaired with new metal. The most rust-prone area (between the roof panel and the front "J-latch cross member") has been treated with POR-15 and the gap between these two parts has been sealed with POR Seam Sealer. The brown areas on the roof's underside in the photos below are remnants of headliner adhesive, not rust.
The photos show the top shortly after sandblasting. I have subsequently primed the entire unit with DP90 (one of the best self-etching primers, IMO).
