Everyone has a ‘right for them’ cargo solution executed or on the ‘to do’ list. I have removed my rear seats and within 10 days I would’ve liked having one of them installed 2x already.

With that as the backdrop I have been looking for essentially a narrow file cabinet like box that could replace the left side rear seat. I’ve been looking at some rear entry, behind the wheel well tool boxes for pickup trucks. (Some even have rear access pull drawers.) My gear list is light compared to many. My biggest, bulkiest thing that is a bit unforgiving is jumper cables. I have a plug kit, light tow strap, light 1st aid kit, little compressor and a few hand tools. It all fits in a slightly overflowing milk crate.

I’ve scoured build threads, searched this forum (100&200 sections) and haven’t seen anything that has a similar footprint to the removed seat. The goal would be to have the cargo area similar in size to the OE cargo area with both seats folded.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Find a local cabinet maker. Have it custom built. Since its a small item I would show up in person. The reason is that they probably won't want the job but the employees will take a side job and not kill you on the price. If there is a loading dock don't even talk to the owner. just chat up the workers. Show up with a sketch of what you want. all dimensions, specific materials and hardware. Keep in mind you be up charged 20-100% of the material cost. So if you provide the hardware it could save you$$. Custom is never cheap but you get exactly what you want. Send me a sketch. I might be able to point you in the direction.

To be clear rear seat in your case is the second row?

If so @TrekboxX built a custom platform for my 100 for the whole 2nd row. you could do a half version. In addition to the shelves in this platform I mounted a pelican case to the top for recovery gear storage.

If you are talking about third row Trekboxx has single side solutions as well other vendors.

I looked for something similar. There are some narrow metal toolbox things with 5 or 7 not very tall drawers. Nothing I liked more than your milk crate. On longer trips I use a plain old plastic bin so I can stack on top. Or put in a cooler.

Yes, 2nd row seating is in place as normal and one 3rd row seat.

I’ll check out Trekboxx, thanks!

Edit: Trekboxx, wow! That’s unquestionably an amazing storage system/solution. I don’t know that I’m there yet but that is pretty sweet. https://www.trekboxx.com/200-series-land-cruiser

I’m thinking about this... It may be just right for my needs.

You can also fit one half of an ARB drawer setup (one drawer, plus a side fit kit) and still use the third row seat on the other side.

Drawers are sold individually anyway, so you can simply purchase a single drawer that is 40” deep and about 11” tall...and also select either rolling floor-top, or standard top.

Fit kit would include fitting for both sides, but the fit kit is pretty reasonably priced. The side fit kit adds storage space as well, with a latched rear panel that gives you access to the space behind the rear wheel-well.

At least a couple mud members have done this.

Thats a good solution. It's mounting and volume is better than the vertical.

That's a cool cabinet, but guaranteed to be loud as hell. You could probably glue some foam inside the door and make it much quieter. All in sub $250- that's a good deal if it fits your needs!

I was thinking I’d truck bedliner or PlastiDip the outer surface and the inside of the drawers. I think that’ll help with the noise but I do expect some rattling.

Agreed but tall dog is more stable and comfortable on a lower floor. I’m trying to have my few things and have the cargo area basically as empty as it would be with both seats folded. I will have one seat and one box.

I think I’ll give it try. I will post the results, success or failure...

Yup, that will definitely help with the items inside the drawers, but the drawers themselves will rattle as well. It will be a fun project!

Well, I did it. So far it’s exactly what I wanted.

I removed one rear seat, used the seat mounting holes and bolted a 3/8” mild-steel plate. I then bolted the toolboxes mount plate to the 3/8” plate. I then drilled, in assembly for the base to truck bolts.

The only ‘non-reversible’ thing is a one inch cut in the carpet near the cargo hook. I wanted to make it so it’s a super easy return to OE.

Overall it’s mostly quiet in normal driving too, I’m very pleased about that.

Supplies:
- Long bolts
- Spacers to elevate 3/8” plate
- Toolbox from Northern.
