Was going to use this for my Cummins swap but life happens and I won’t be needing it anymore.

This is the fully hydraulic (no electronics required) transmission that came behind 1990-1992 80-series with the 1HD-T Diesel engine. It is also a bit stronger internally than the electronic A442F sold in America, and the torque converter has a lower stall speed.

It came out of a 1991 HDJ81 with about 94,000 miles that was totaled. Fluid in it is cherry red, no signs of wear. Includes converter and HF2A transfer case (electronic actuator is missing but it is the same part that came on all 80-series).

I’m asking $2000 which is less than I paid for it. Located in Petersburg VA 23805, I’d be willing to meet any buyers within a couple hours of here. I could ship it but it does weigh about 300lbs so shipping would not be cheap.

Could you post a photo of the serial number plate (example below)? Thanks.

Yes, a fully hydraulic A442F from a ‘91 HDJ81. I don’t suppose you have the frame number or VIN from the donor vehicle?
I do not, but a fully hydraulic A442F can be identified externally fairly easily as several key features are different than the electronic versions. And as far as I know there were no differences in the units across the 3 short years that they were made.

Mine is fully hydraulic. The FSM for the hydraulic A442F appears to show some design differences. I was hoping to see more of a similarity in serial numbers, as it would be nice to have a backup for parts, and the price is attractive. If you were a bit closer, I’d probably take a chance. Best of luck with the sale.

Design differences between 1990-1992? Which FSM are you referring to, perhaps RM188E or RM312U? I have both on hand if you could direct me to the page

When you cross-reference the number of plates and discs shown in RM188E with the electronic parts catalog, the differences appear. It might be a mistake in the parts catalog, or maybe not. I can’t be sure without tearing down my transmission. As I said, if you were closer, I’d take a chance. Thanks.

I think you are misunderstanding what I've been saying. I am saying that between hydraulic A442F transmissions, which were only built from 1990-1992, there were no differences between the units. There was no electronic A442F put in the 80-series during these years, the first electronic A442F was in 1993. All hyraulic A442F that were put behind 1HD-T engines should be identical to each other.

Yes there are internal differences with the electronic versions, especially between gasser and diesel, but that doesn't really apply here.

Anyway I understand if you still don't want to buy it, I just wanted to clarify that there is no 'chance' in it at all.

I believe the only differences in these are between gas vs. diesel, not across diesels. I believe the diesels have an extra plate/disc set? At any rate I just bought a rebuilt '91 from a diesel and put it in my '90 HDJ81 and it's been running great.

Yes, but they never put the hydromechanical A442F behind a gasser. Only the 1HD-T. The 3FE got the A440F which is similar and also hydromechanical but has some large differences from any A442F.

In the later electronic years, A442Fs were different between gas and diesel units. The diesel units have additional clutches (more holding power), a slightly different pump to match the lower revs of the diesel, and obviously a different converter and valve body. There might be a few other small differences but those are the big ones I know of.
