I heard that it is possible to drive most of the outer banks on the beach in the winter. Me and some friends are thinking about doing this trip sometime in January. Has anyone out there done this before? We would probably go Friday night and stay at the VA border and then drive the beach on Saturday. It supposedly takes like 6 hrs total.

last year when i was there on the east side they had some fences up so you could not get through .but i drove many miles and had a great time contact the park rangers they can tell you just how far you can go:cheers:

You cannot drive from the VA border to the SC on the beach - legally anyway. Plus there are many islands in that stretch that require the use of paved bridges or Ferrys.

You can drive to the VA border on the beach via the 4x4 beach access at the end of Highway 12 just north of Corolla. Without stopping this stretch takes less than 30 minutes.

You cannot even drive the entire OBX on the beach. The 3 islands are broken up into sections that allow beach access but there are many protected areas where you can't get your vehicle on the beach.

agreed. But if you are into ruffin' it, portsmouth is pretty sweet too.

Agreed, very sweet.

And if you're into little to no crowds, Ocracoke is like Manhattan compared to Portsmouth. The fishing at Portsmouts is awesome too.

Just don't forget your bug spray. :D
