Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone has tried an engine/tranny swap on a FJ-40 using a V6 from a 4wd Tacoma?
The reason I'm curious about the V6 is because I'd like to keep the rig all Toyota and the optional TRD supercharger is intriguing.
Don't have a Land Cruiser yet, but I've wanted one forever and have been considering on getting a '73. At least a pre-'74 because of emission laws here in CA.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Don't know of anyone with that combo installed at this time, but if you ran the whole drivetrain, it would be kewl....

IIRC, their t-case is drivers drop tho and a centered rear output, so you'd need front and rear axles to match....

I've seriously considered hunting for just such setup for a comp rig tho...

Thanks for the reply Brian.
Yeah, I thought about that too and on the plus side, you'd get a full disc brake conversion when swapping the axles (if you swapped out the knuckles, hubs and everything else).
I plan on doing a frame up rebuild, (when I finally get one) so why not just go for it and do it right the first time eh?

I believe TLC in California did that swap. Check out their website. I saw a picture of it on a website-IH8MUD maybe.

It shouldn't matter what year 40 you get if you are planning on the Taco swap all the emmisions would easily pass.

Go for it! I am jealous as hell!

I would say that this would be a decent swap. The 3.4 is a very good motor. The TRD supercharger DOES NOT WORK well without expensive upgrades. The kit runs lean, even with the 7th injector kit. There is aftermarket support for this problem from Underdog Racing, which addresses the issues that TRD ignored.

Now, since you don't even have the vehicle yet, I'd just plan on a 4.0 swap of the new Toy V6 with 255 hp stock. Great motor! This is the motor I would plan on using:) The 2005 Tacoma will have a 5spd auto or a 6 spd manual mated to the 4.0 v6. This would be SWEET! Start looking for a donor motor.

Sounds like a killer engine, do they plan on a 4x4 configuration for the V6 with the six speed tranny?.
That would be sweet!

The 2005 Tacoma will be available with 4x4, 4.0 V6, and 6 spd manual. Previously, you could not get a manual in the double cab trucks, but now it is an option:)

Calamaridog, thanks for the info, now I need to start saving my pennies!

One of the guys at Marlin Crawler has done this swap already... No idea of the results, but I'd personally skip a V6 in a 40 - too heavy of a vehicle for the v6, IMHO.

I can see how you would come that conclusion, but my 04 Tundra with the same motor goes down the road just fine. I cruise no problem at 80 MPH in my 30 mile commute to work - loaded or not. If you consider that it would lighten the truck considerably, thus improving the power to weight ratio - the heavy cruiser suddenly is no longer heavy sans the f/2f and the power is considerably more - 195 hp vs 135?

I have a Buick V6 in my 40 so I had to stick up for the idea.

I know a couple guys who run Chevy 4.3s and swear by them, just depends the state of build you are headed for. With 33-35" tires, the V6 has plenty of power, great mileage and leaves the engine compartment less cluttered and helps stuff a longer drivetrain in a short 40.

Butch Lewis runs this setup and I don't think anyone would argue with his skills as a builder, i hope to have the V6 swap done by mid winter. The Taco setup would be amazing, just add the Toybox or low gearset and you've got a baddass drivetrain, good luck finding a totaled '05 Taco - isn't that like wishing bad luck on someone else - they need to total a new vehicle in order for you to get your components.
