Does the V-bank cover (humongous grey plastic engine cover) serve any purpose, other than asthetics? Can I leave it off all the time with no ill effects? I know it makes the engine compartment look clean, but the beauty under the hood is the V-8 under the cover, not the cover itself.

Plus, I had a plummer at my house when I was doing some PM. He and his assistant walked by and made some comment like, "That thing doesn't even have an engine." It really hurt my feelings.

While I do not know for certain I would bet it's there for aesthetics only. Plastic covers are the norm now. Average mom + pop look under the hood and see clean and simple and are impressed. Nothing wrong with clean and simple but I like mine a little spicier with beautiful alloy castings and even a turbo or two :D My Audi S4 (miss that car) was the last Audi to show it's engine, the plastic covers came right after.

The Tundra with essentially the same engine has no cover so I doubt it is functional. The V8 however is not that impressive looking from the top. No large turbo or carberator on top. Just an aluminum manifold.

My mechanic had never worked on a LC100 and told me he though it had a totally new toyota engine until he took off the cover and saw that it was the same as his Tundra. He wanted to get a cover for his Tundra.

It is strictly a decoration. Think of it as a hup cap for the motor...:D

I think I'll pull off the hub caps to show off the big lugs and big nuts too.
