Has anyone been to the Flintrock range in UNF? I have a new toy I'd like to sight in but want to know a little about the range before I drive all that way. I'd hate to get out there and have to shoot at rocks all day. The UNF website barely mentions it at all.

I've been thinking about going down there and shooting as well. I have never seen it just heard alot of shots while wheelin'

I would love to but I am tied up Sat. Maybe we could try again pretty soon.

I just talked to them yesterday. This year they will be charging $3 a day for wristbands and the range will be observed both by rangers and range volunteers. $30 season pass for shooting. they have a pistol side and a rifle side (approx 100yrd). The UNF site is hard to navigate but there is a uwharrie shooters club forum that is more informative. Im sure the rangers station could answer any other ?s. It is currently open. While i hear the targets are getting a bit worn, they still prefer you dont bring target stands. Paper and metal targets only. HTH

I haven't been out there in years but it was a decent place to shoot. They were covered and had wooden benches the last time i was there. Was decent if you went on a weekday. This is the first I've heard of a fee being charged to go there but like i said it's been awhile.

The fee was 3 bucks a day or 30 annually. Wasn't a bad time at all. We ran about 350rds through the AR and about 100 through the .40 cal. The new AR fired great but Julie's Taurus is a heap of crap. My hands are too big. I kept releasing the magazines while firing.

There are about 7 or so lanes on the rifle side and another 3 lanes on the pistol range. Both are covered and each side offers a bench to shoot from. Bring targets. Seems like everyone was using signs from the recent elections and sticking their targets on them. That method really seemed to be the easiest of all that I saw. There is a restroom but only one. Bring paper. :)

Safety seemed OK for the most part. If you needed a clear all you had to do was call for it between firing. Everyone respected your needs. We really only ran into one jack hole. He was shooting something that went fully auto. IMO people like that give the hobby a bad name and bring the wrong attention to the sport. Just like offroading on private property does for groups like ours or street racing has done to hotrodding.

FWIW we did see a lot of trees down. I cleared one off of 576 but noticed a lot more throughout the forest. Just down from the range on 576 their is trail head but I cannot remember the name. It had a couple trees down that I could see on my little scouting walk. There was also a very large drainage pipe in the middle of the trail too.

Thanks for the write up. I've always had a good time there.

Like they say, it only takes one bad apple to ruin it for everyone...

Where is everyone getting fairly priced, in-stock ammo these days???
