I put a used starter in my 60 and it makes a terrifying grinding noise, sometimes, before it gets a hold of the flywheel. It sounds like its not engaging completely but not all of the time. Most of the time it engages and starts nicely. Easy fix or should I just get a new/rebuilt starter? Also, is the bendix gear softer than the flywheel to keep a starter from realy eating a flywheel?
thanks

Make sure the bolts are tight again. I would try and find another used starter for sale and try it. When you pull the one out in there check the teeth on the starter gear. You can also pull the inspection cover easily from under the cruiser and inspect the flywheel. You can rotates the engine so you can see all them with a wrench. Maybe you land on a bad spot on the flywheel sometimes and that causes the noise.
