Has anyone used the PTO output for anything else than a winch? I have a factory PTO but the truck came with an electric winch. I was curious if anyone has used the PTO to drive a compressor, or to drive a 110 v generator?

I have seen one on the net which drove a generator / welder.....
Can't see any problems driving what ever you want.....PTO compressors used by tractors all the time....

Not much point these days ,pumps, generators, compressors are so much cheaper, compact and already have their own power supply.
Farmers use to use PTO attachments ,some used them for shearing sheep and pumping water, but I dont think they bother now.
The current model V8 doesnt have a PTO as an option anymore,Ive heard.

Thanks for the feedback, I agree with the statements made, however with the electrical Air Compressors I find the supply OK for airing up but limited if you want to run any air tools off it. I suppose for a generator it would be limited value as 24 V to 110 V converters at 2KW are quite cheap now. ( however running a 2KW or even 1KW load for any time would be difficult even with engine running.) Haveing the complete PTO there makes me feel I should be useing it ! although I dont have the drive shaft off the flane, but that would be easily made. Does any one know whatthe RPM is off the PTO, PTO RPM relative to engine RPM?

Ive always liked the idea of the PTO as well,a sawmill for your own firewood would be great.

Pto speed depends on which gear it is in.

Not what your after but interesting.

Now that is interesting, so if parked, or in neutral, then nothing at the pto, be hard to get any wood cut on that sawmill while turning in circles around a log pile. I am surprised but now that I think about it, of course it make sense, its off the transfercase, so after transfer is in neutral, we can dial in almost any speed we want ;-)

Lowenbrau uses his PTO to drive a hydraulic pump... which is solely used to turn a hydraulic winch... So, no, I guess it's still just used for a winch in that case.

I have room just behind the hydraulic pump for a York compressor off the same shaft. I'm just trying to decide if I really need another 100 lbs on my rig.

If you had the compressor mounted, id bet you use it more often than the winch! You realy think it will add 100 lbs?

There were types of PTOs fitted to Jeeps Landrovers that ran another t/case mounted behind the rear axle that could be used to power a trailer, effectively making a 6wd.
I saw a jeep version once but it was being used to run a pump on a trailer to spray insecticide at the time.

Maybe less, but considerably a lot more than my 7 year old bushranger 12v compressor that cost $250 and can be left behind when not needed.

Yeah I'm thinking a York compressor, bracket, hoses tank etc will get close to 100 lbs before I'm done. I have a Viar now that does the job slowly when required. I had a look at the ridiculous claims on the Bushranger page though. They are so full of crap they should really be in politics.

Whats ridiculous about their claims(I havent looked at them)?. My bushranger maxair compressor pumps 4 x 32 or 33inch tyres from 16 psi to 45 psi in about 12 mins.
The time has never altered in the 7 years Ive had it.
This compressor also came 1st twice in comparisons overseen by independant mechanical engineers in 4wdAction testing, which is why I bought it and it has not disappointed me.
In fact it is one of the few pieces I have bought that has given me the 100% satisfaction that we all crave from our offroad goodies.
I have the earlier version of this one and I believe they can be bought cheaper then the rec retail

I like to keep the engine bay clear of any obstructions so have never bothered with on board compressors an such.

Ooops the "ridiculous claims" were a metric conversion error of mine. I understood an impossible flow rate for the advertised current draw. Looking at the specs on your link I think we have very similar compressors and I have also had good (if slow) performance from mine. I believe this is the one i have... VIAIR Corporation - 400H Part No. 40042

A York compressor driven by the PTO would fill all those tires in a third of the time, I'd guess, but is it really worth it? I used to think that being able to run air tools with it made it worthwhile but these days I just carry cordless electrical tools.

They are possibly from the same factory, anyone can order that style compressor to their price and specs.
Im not concerned about the time it takes, whether its 10min or 20min,its only 5-6 times a year I use it.
I havent tried it ,but Ive been told the one I have will do 5 vehicles, one after the other till it heats up and trips out.

What about a 24 volt PUMA 3/4 hp or 1 hp - about 30 lbs with 1.5 us gal tank
