Has anyone converted an LJ78 with a 2L-TE engine to a 1KD-FTV or 2KD-FTV engine? Since, according to Wikipedia, the 2KD-FTV is based on the 2L engine, could I get a modern diesel into my 1990 Prado when, someday, my little 4 banger goes kaput? It's running fine now. I have the auto transmission. I just want to keep this truck running for another 20 years or so.

I have always thought they were based on the 1KZ block. The easier solution would be to add a 1KZ T or IKZ TE.
There are also plenty of 3L, 5L and 5LE around
The 1KD FTV and 2KD FTV (the difference is in cc 3.0 vs 2.5) have a lot of electronics to work around.
These are about to be replaced with a new range of 4 cyl diesels designated with a "G" in 2.5 and 2.8 litre

I have not seen it done, but it would make for a nice combination.

With regard to the 1KZ, here is a decent looking KZJ78 for sale in vancouver BC: http://vancouver.craigslist.ca/rds/cto/5008688575.html I suppose with the KD blocks being the same as the KZ, the KD would at lest 'bolt in' to the KZJ78. Electronics would be the challenge as said above.

That does look nice, but us poor US cousins can only get 25 year old JDM vehicles here. Bummer. Why would the electronics be any more difficult on a newer motor? One would have to swap out the ECM, and most of the engine management stuff anyway with any replacement other than another 2L-TE, correct?

Now that I've got the engine light code 12 problem to go away, the rig running cool up big hills, most of the nagging electric tidbits taken care of, my desire for a new engine and more power is fading away. Funny that.
