Really not sure what to use for under coating. I have seen paint to bedliner to some stuff called lizer skin and other stuff. Im kinda in the air for the bedliner stuff. I have it in the inside of the tube on my other fj40 but seems that the dirt sticks to it better then falling or cleaning up fast. what you guys use?.

A lot of people use POR-15 or Rust bullet.

I used POR 15 on my axles and rust bullet followed by por 15 chassis black on the frame and underneath.

Inside my Tub I used POR 15 followed by POR 15 topcoat primer then single stage polyurethane paint then DURABACK bed liner

POR flows out smooth leaves a nice finish, Rust Bullet goes on very thick and will leave brush marks but that is okay underneath.

POR takes the most prep it likes a rough surface and sticks best to rust. I took mine to bare metal anyway then you use the Acid etch and marine clean (OSPHO acid and TSP cleaner work as well).

both take a top coat to preserve appearance.

Eastwood has some nice stuff too and EBAY is a good source for a lot of this stuff.

when all is said and done I will treat the bottom with waxoyl. You can get this in an amber see thru color and basically it flows into all the cracks and everything and coats the surface with a light wax.

waxoyl is uk but there are american equivalents and a NATO spec preservative for mil equip ---they are all basically the same kind of thing.

The lizard skin looks sweet because of its sound deadening qualitites however it is very expensive so I to chose to use durabak. You can get it in colors as seen above. At first i was a little worried about how tough it may be however last night i had to throw a couple pieces into the blasting cabinet and they came out spotless except where the durabak was i couldnt remove it with the finer beads........ I will post a picture later of the parts to bare metal minus where the durabak was.

Also as a side note you dont have to infact bsmith123 pulled it off nicely however i recommend buying a cheap sputz gun (approx. 25.00) and spraying the liner on there. I didnt like how mine was turning out with a brush. The roller worked just fine however i couldnt get it close enough in the corners.

I used the por 15 and durabak also. The durabak I used as grainuals in it and is rough and holds dirt init Im going to over coat this summer with smooth finish dura in the same color It is strong stuff. I like the look and finish of the sem but already had the durabak. I brushed the corners and tight spots first than rolled over it two light coats turned out good with no brush marks but it does have a ruff finish so Im sure that hides it too.

I am in the process of my rebuild, I am using POR-15. On the frame I am using 2 coats of POR-15 and on the body panels where their is a tendancy to rust I also used por-15 on the 2nd coat while it is tacky I am spraying the 3M undercoating on it as well as the rest of the underbody. I am pretty much done and it took almost a gallon of por-15 and about 7 cans of 3M . I have invested about $250 in matererials but I can't imagine rust ever coming back.

gold anvil

I was told I was gold plating an anvil with all this stuff, and my motor plans were polishing a turd! ha ha!

I see I am not the only one!

It sounds as though you are done and it went well but be careful because i did the same but i didnt wait long enough for the por to slightly cure and the por15 off gases and created bubbles in my top coat.......

how long...

So if my POR-15 has been sitting since august it should be OK if I spray it next March?

Undercoating fenders: What does it take to keep thrown rocks from the tire from dinging the fender and "starring" the paint? Is just undercoating enough?

You will have to worry more about getting it to bond rather than off gassing..... Not an issue just have to use their primer

Having camera problems so it may not happen as i had claimed...

I am in Florida where the humidity is very high so the POR-15 dries real quick. The only place I have had a bubbling problem is where I didn't prep properly (i.e. had oil residue). I have a brake leak thread going, and the brake fluid goes through por-15 like paint stripper on paint. I would still use the POR-15 it coats reala smooth and thick. This is a frame-on restoration so at this point i am tired of working underneath the vehicle, but the 3M undercoating coats real nice, you just need to keep the can vetical or it will clog. I keep returning half used cans back to Advance Auto parts and they keep giving me new cans, plus its been on sale for 2 cans for $10. I would not waste any money on bedliner material underneath the vehicle. If the undercoating flakes off, just respray it with the can stuff. But the 3M stuff is hard to get off you skin as is POR-15. I wear rubber gloves, a long sleave shirt, and goggles, I also use high wattage halogen lights to make sure I get the nooks and crannies.
