I just changed out my stock air filter for a K&N stock replacement. I noticed that the rest of the intake (from the filter to the throtle body) had a plastic mesh and what appeared to be like an activated charcoal filter. ?????? I have been looking at cold air intakes, and they don't have any kind of secondary filter. Anyone know what this charcoal filter is for, or what it does? The only thing I know that charcoal can be used for is BBQ's, filtering wiskey, and gas masks. Can I rip out this "secondary filter" for better air flow/less restiance, and not have to pay big $$$ for a cold air intake? AND which cold air intake has the CARB approval for my 07' TACO?

Yes, there is a secondary air filter, and yes, it is there to aid in the reduction of vapor emissions. Plenty of people have removed it, and as expected the reported results vary - anywhere from 5-10 hp gain, to "why did I bother."

But I agree in theory removing it should help the truck breathe better.

Jacket, thanks. Now the big question------in the repubic of kali--------will it throw off the emissions?

It is there to filter "vapours, fumes, etc." from the engine after the engine is turned off. Technically it should not affect emmisions at all...

If you are using a K&N replacement filter, leave the charcoal one on, it will likely help to avoid oil from the K&N getting on the Mass Airflow Sensor.

I had an AFE intake on my Tacoma and I hated it. Loud and obnoxious and to me a noticeable loss of low end power. That being said I drove in some extremely dusty roads and that dry AFE filter works amazingly well...

Taco Dave, thanks for the input. I have had the same problem w/the K&N oil on several other vechicles. My big question is how did you loose any power from opening up your intake? I have heard about a throttle body spacer which is supposte to bump up the low end, etc. ? Evre tried one, does it work? The biggest problem is trying to find a cold air intake that is CARB (Cal Air Resorces Board) approved. With the way things are going, every time you're pulled over the CHP (Cal Hwy Princesses) will check under your hood.
