I lived in Anchorage (60north) for more than 20 years before moving south to Seattle and now Menlo park. While I'm pretty handy having restored a series Land Rover and doing lots of boat work I no longer have the time, tools and shop space that I once had. I'm shopping for a series 100 that will more than likely need lots of baseline service. I will tackle projects as time permits and with lots of advice on this forum. All that said I will need reliable, trustworthy mechanics within a reasonable driving distance of Menlo park/palo alto. Cost is always an issue but I most value reliable work done on time and without lots of hidden markups. Are there recommended options other than the Toyota dealer or am I dreaming?

Well, welcome to the Bay Area! Although I can't help you out with a recommendation pesonally because I haven't had to use anybody yet however I will ping a local FJ40 guy that I know if he has any.

calling @orangefj45 Georg is in stockton but plenty of guys go to him from the bay area. He is one of the best hands down and very honest. Mudrak is in the bay area too. I know I am missing a 4-5 more good shops as well. But I have done business with Georg buying and selling and if you search for him on here, you will find nothing but rave reviews.
I'd give these guys a call... San Carlos Auto Repair | A+ Japanese Auto Repair, Inc. They're in San Carlos on Industrial Blvd a bit south of Holly Street...easy to get to from 101. Ask to speak to one of the owners, Adam or Eric.
