So, was looking over the LandCruiser today having some free time on my hands and thought the front turn signal lenses were sure looking foggy. Over the years (*I assume these are original), they've gotten oxidized, road grimed, sand blasted, and had untold numbers of bugs smashed against them, so I looked around at what I had at my disposal, grabbed a Cross-Head screwdriver and pulled them out for a quick shine.

One quick Molex connector and 2 stainless screws per assembly later, and the housings were out and ready to go. Starting point;

The Rain-X plexiglass Headlight Restoration kit ($14.61@Amazon.com - http://www.amazon.com/Rain-X-800001...8-1&keywords=rain-x+headlight+restoration+kit) includes some water in a spray bottle for wet sanding, 3 different grades of very fine sandpaper mounted to foam board, a wax polish, a microfiber cloth to apply and buff the polish, and a small bottle of sealer that smelled suspiciously like Rain-X windshield treatment.

A couple of minutes with each wet sanding pad, application of the wax and buffing it all out gave the following result (both refinished and original faded lense shown for comparison);

Did the other lense, checked the bulb assemblies for corrosion, and threw them back on the LandCruiser;

The PS lense seems to have gotten moisture in it at some point, as the bulb fixture had some minor rust around the edges, and the inside of the lense was a little milky, but not enough to warrant buying a new turn signal assembly for OEM $$$.

Quick fix for faded turn signals, and I get some satisfaction for the rig looking a little nicer, better visibility for turn signals, and another project to prod other members to do stuff to their trucks!

Looks nice - sounds like a future clinic for a CSC monthly meeting..

Wet sand and clear UV coat

Have seen this done on fogged poly/composite headlights too. Different method - wet sand with increasingly fine grit, and then a final coat of UV resistant clear spray paint. Worked incredibly well, and from what I've read when you sand off that top oxidized layer of plastic, the UV inhibiting coating is also removed (whats left of it) and your sanded lenses will turn again, much quicker than original.

The UV clearcoat paint (don't have brand, but it looked like standard rattle can) is supposed to guard against the plastic getting burned again as quickly. YMMV - but just wanted to pass along. Check Ford forums - Mudstains from the 1990's were horrible about this, as well as Ranger/Aerostar's, etc.

wow, big difference :cool:

no matter what, still look better than if you left them alone

Looking good! The bad part is that mine have holes in them :(

Have you checked with wspastorbryan, packetstormin, or tools r us? I believe they are parting out 80's...

I really like your Collector's Edition. The rear drawer system is awesome. The way you divorced your puma to fit it in the "dead space" is really cool! And the plumbing looks very professional, well done!!

Good luck acquiring new lenses (or not) :)
