Hello my friends.
First of all, totally new to this forum and it looks the goods. I'm Jacob and I have a 1998 HZJ75 which is pretty stock with an aftermarket turbo (the current centre on my problems).
I've had a look and can't find (I'm possibly blind and couldn't find it) a thread regarding my problem. So I'm calling up the expertise of all of you great souls.
I've blown up three turbos in the past two or three weeks. The first one was on the vehicle when I purchased it, I suspect it was a cheap Chinese CT26. I drove it about 2000kms and then she blew. There was an excessive amount of shaft play and was hitting the housing on both the compressor housing and exhaust housing. I bought another turbo (again, this was a cheap one) and the exact same thing happened after getting it installed by a exhaust shop. When this was inspected, it seemed as if he used a massive amount of gasket goo which you could see in the exhaust housing after it died as well. This looked to be the cause as you could see where foreign particles had hit the exhaust wheel and rubber particles were in the exhaust housing. Cool. Didn't want to go back to him.
I went and bought a Mamba CT26 for just shy of a grand. Great looking turbo with no shaft play and balance sheets and all the goodies you'd expect to install it.
I changed the oil and oil filter, checked for pressure, checked coolant was getting to the turbo too. All the lines were good to go. Installed the turbo myself and my word was it successful at first. No bolts snapped, no nuts cross-threaded, everything looked fine and dandy. All new metal gaskets and normal gaskets where required and everything torqued to spec. Primed it up before installing then disconnected the fuel lines and cranked the engine to prime it with the engines oil pressure. Sweet as can be, started it and ran like a charm. Took it for a drive, no problems, didn't give it the beans too much, let it run in a little bit. Drove up some slight hills, and throughout the whole time, I didn't see more than 10PSI. Happy days until 'boom!'. Exact same thing happened, ridiculous vibration sound, pulled off the intake to the turbo and you bet ya', massive shaft play.
What could possible cause this problem my friends? And have I missed any information that you may require to help me?
Thank you in advance!
