Tundra Coils

I've done some searching on the Tundra coils, and haven't found what I was hoping to so here goes.

In my quest to make 285/75/16 Dueler Revo's fit the Tacoma, I think I've narrowed down what kind of lift would work best for me. I'm on a medium budget, and don't think I need anything the likes of the expensive coil overs. Still I want something more than just a spring spacer and AAL in the back.

Leads to some good info on using the Tundra coils and Toyota shocks. Looks like a good reasonably priced system. Anyone using this currently that could compare it to the OME or the factory suspension?

Sonora Steel looks like they sell full kits for a fairly good price. Anybody know if CDan is also TacomaDan, and offers good prices on new Tundra springs/struts/shocks/coils/etc? I wonder if it would be worth it to order the factory parts from Dan, and pick up the misc. other stuff from Sonoran or someplace local.

Still researching for the rear. Thinking of a new leaf spring + shackle to get the 3" or so. Recommendations?

Cruiserdan has access to all parts Toyota (at least if they're not obsolete from Toyota). You can call or PM him and get his advice. Chances are that if its been done- he knows whether it works well or not.

Here's a synopsis:

Tacoma/3rd Generation 4Runner “TRD Tundra” lift

Front (This is pretty much a TRD-styled bolt-on front lift for 4Runners and Tacoma’s)

• Tundra TRD 2WD Front Coils:
o Left Coil Part Number: 48131-AF100 ($89)
o Right Coil Part Number: 48131-AF090 ($89)
• OEM Top Plates (if they wish to keep their original ones unmodified)
o 4Runner 48609-35030 ($82/pr)
o Tacoma 48609-35010 ($82/pr)
• Custom 3/8" Top Plate Spacers ($37 per pair)
• Extended Studs: Daystar part #BU3000 (~$14.00)
• Old Man Emu N91S struts ($93)

Notes about TRD struts/shocks:
• Tundra 2WD Red TRD Bilstein Struts (PTR13-34021-01) are only sold in a set of 4 (both fronts and rears- they are no longer available individually).
• The 2WD versions are supposedly LOW PRESSURE while the 4WD versions are supposedly HIGH PRESSURE.
• There are also Bilstein ‘Heavy Duty’ Yellow Struts and Bilstein ‘Regular’ Yellow TRD Struts. Neither of these is correct for this application.

There are 3 different Bilstein Shocks that can be easily confused on this setup.

1. OEM Toyota/Bilstein - color yellow/blue, labeled with both the Toyota and Bilstein brand names - comes as part of the "TRD" or OFF ROAD option package. Toyota part # 48510-09750 (front) & 48531-09380 (rear); the set of four runs about $170 new. YOU DO NOT WANT THESE.

2. TRD Bilstein for 4x4's - color red/blue, labeled with both the Toyota and Bilstein brand names. Toyota part #PTR13-40201-01 (formerly a TRD Sport part) runs about $317 for a set of four. These shocks are 40% stiffer on bump and about 25% stiffer on rebound than #1. YOU DO NOT WANT THESE.

3. TRD Bilstein for 4x2's - color red/blue, labeled with both the Toyota and Bilstein brand names. Toyota part#PTR13-34021-01 (formerly a TRD Sport part) runs about $317 for a set of four. These shocks are slightly softer at low velocities/low speed articulation, but stiffer at high velocities/high speed articulation than #1. This allows for super soft and smooth on-road manners along with superb flex while crawling. IF YOU WANT TRD, THESE ARE THE ONES YOU WANT.

Instead of the 4x2 Tundra TRD Bilstein, a set of Old Man Emu N91s Struts can be substituted. They work in a similar manner as the 4x2 TRD Bilsteins in that the valving allows for soft feel at slow articulation speeds. You probably DO NOT want the "comfort" (N91c). These are VERY soft - softer than the OEM Toyota struts that came on 4Runners from Japan.


4Runner Rear (1996-2002):

Old Man Emu 891 (3”) springs

Old Man Emu N86 (Firm) Rear Shocks

Tacoma Rear (1998-2004):

Old Man Emu 15A/B (2.5”) springs

Old Man Emu N85 (Firm) Rear Shocks

Tacoma Rear (1995-1997):

Old Man Emu 18 (2.5”) springs
(must remove 3rd overload leaf and use Tacoma bushing)

Old Man Emu N85 (Firm) Rear Shocks

I am running Tundra coils w/ OME shocks on the front of my '01 4Runner. I like them a lot and really enjoy the ride over the stock suspension and the old Tundra-valved Sway-A-Way 2.0 coilovers I used to run. Keep in mind, this Tundra coil idea was originally "designed" for a 3rd Gen 4Runner. I seem to remember reading on other forums that the Tacoma guys were getting different lift heights from the coils and 3/8" HDPE spacers. There is always the chance you might not like the same type of ride I do.

My advice would be to call Steve at Sonoran Steel to ask him any questions you might have on his Tacoma Lift Kit or just to BS about what results you can expect from the Tundra front end.

regarding your closing comments on the rear: a new leaf pack alone will/can net you the 3'' w/out longer shackles. cheap and less desirable options are the blocks or shackles. middle of the road gets you into add a leafs, or go all out on a new leaf pack w/ or without greasable shackles. Ive got the deaver 9 pack and love it! it flexes well but doesnt quite retain the stock load limits of 1200 lbs. Whats the total on the tundra coil system??? just make sure its not approaching the cost of the whole ome kit. When i was looking best deal going was 730 i think for this.

Good info, thanks. I'm not fond of lift blocks, or of adding leafs. I want to do it once and do it right. Good to know about the Deaver 9 pack, I'll have to take a look at it. Did you add greasable shackes?

The main reason I haven't been thinking much about the OME was reports of the front sagging a lot with an ARB/Winch combo, and having to use spacers to level it out. Seems that the Tundra springs hold their height fairly well from what I can read. Have you experienced any dropping of your OME springs?

Sonoran's complete kit is around 1k, but doesn't have a full spring pack listed. I'll have to price around and see what I can get these parts for. Getting the complete kit and not having to mess with it has gotta be worth something....

2007+ Compliant with 99-06 tundra shocks and struts???

not too far off topic but does any one know if the coil over struts and shocks from a 2007 tundra will fit on an earlier model tundra such as a 2001 model?
