So my 07 Tundra has a bumper plating problem. It's pretty common. I had to go by Dan Wolf Toyota in Naperville (I mention it so Google might direct searchers to this thread) to pick up some parts. While I was there I decided to make an appointment to get my rear bumper replaced again.

Bumper one was destroyed by my son who couldn't follow the direction to not try to back the trailer up. That one lasted about 3000 miles.

Bumper two rusted right at the wings like many do. It lasted about 9,000 miles or one winter.

Bumper two lasted about 8000 miles. Roughly 9 months. made it to about January of a pretty rough Chicago winter.

The service writer looked at it, then went around the front. I told him I don't have any problem with the front. He pointed out where they tend to rust and sure enough, I have a little rust just starting to form right where the fog light pieces fit in. then he looked at my service record.

"Are you still waiting on this part?"

"No. It was just replaced"

"It's already been done?"

"Yup. That's what I said when I came in." dumbass.

"Wait here"

He comes back with the service manager. She looks at the rear bumper, then goes around front.

"I can't do anything about the front" she says. "You have this damage here" She points to a inch long scratch about 6 inches away from the rust. Whatever. I'll deal with that issue when the rust on the front starts to bug me or when I turn in the truck on the lease.

She went to the back and looked at the rust. She calls over a tech and asks him if the bumper looks like it was damaged. I start a slow boil. He looks at it for a while and says it doesn't look damaged to him. She looks some more. Total she scrutinizes my bumper for a good ten minutes or more.

I tell her that bumper has never been hit by anything, that this is a known issue, and that I would bet they have a half dozen trucks scheduled for the exact same thing this week. She tells me she has to check it out because it had already been done once.

Bull. I had asked the service writer if Toyota was going to cover this known problem forever, because I was thinking about buying the truck after the lease was up. Clearly they have no intention at Dan Wolf of continuing to fix them for free.

Who instructed the service manager to give me a hard time? The management of the dealer? The regional rep? Toyota USA? Why else would she do more than just accept that it's another rusted chrome Tundra bumper and submit the warranty repair?

My suggestion to any one experiencing this problem, the broken tail gate latches or the radio issue that they call Toyota customer service first and have them call your local dealer. I would surely want some assurance that the bumper will be covered for at least some decent time after each replacement if I owned the truck.

Once again Toyota proves why it has one of the lowest dealership experience ratings of any body.

I called Toyota customer service. They documented the problem and will have the dealer service rep call me.

What's the dealer rep gonna tell me? I want someone from Toyota assuring me that this problem will be fixed or be covered past the 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty.

Anybody that is looking at this otherwise wonderful truck needs to be wary of Toyota dicking its customers on this one.

They aren't covering it under their "bumper to bumper" warranty? That's ironic.

well, that's the first problem...NO, and I repeat NO Toyota warranty is "bumper to bumper". If you go back to your factory warranty book that came with the truck it states that its a "basic limited warranty" and only covers those parts that are deamed defective either in materials or workmanship.

Here is where is gets out of control:mad:....the warranty states that your trunk is protected from corrosion PERFORATION, a complete rust through, for 60mo unlimited miles, then goes on to say that they recommend how to protect your truck from corrosion in the Ownwers Manual under "Corrosion Prevention and Appearance Care"...

...and it gets worse:bang:...under "what is not covered" two bullet points that the dealers LOVES to use to get out of replairs is, and I quote (lol)
:Abuse or negligence
:Airborne chemicals, tree sap, road debris, rail dust, salt, hail, floods, wind storms, lightning and other enviromental conditions

Offically they dont have to do ANYTHING until it rusts through, and dont have to do anything if the rust is superficial only. This is the reality of dealing with any company and their legal loop-holes to get out of repairs. That's why the service manager was spending so much time looking everything over...she was looking for an "out". Either way, I would find another dealer to do the work, even if Toyota's customer service approves the repair. We tend to bend over backwards to make our customers happy at my dealer, but that'sn part because we have 15 Toyota dealers in a 50mi radius. If we dont make them happy, someone else will.

Good luck, and I hope they do the right thing! :)

Went back today to get the bumper replaced and it was a totally different place.

Here's your loaner Mr. Gumby. We're running behind and we don't want you to wait for it. (highlander hybrid. it's like driving a playstation minivan)

You need to talk to the cust service rep? hang on a sec.

Service manager comes out with a camera.

We're gonna take some pics and see if we can't get this front bumper handled. The rear will be done in the morning.

The wife, who is currently into blog monitoring and social networking sites as marketing tools thinks it's because of this post.

I think it's because I called Toyota USA cust service.

Either way we'll see how it goes.

They called this morning to tell me that they were putting on the front bumper (:D) and one of the bolt holes doesn't line up. "we think the frame is bent" This is the factory bumper. It has a little dent in it. Is the frame really bent from that? Or are the bumpers being sourced from some crappy supplier who can't make a decent part?

Went to pick it up tonight. I was pretty late because the shop was really busy.

They drove it around and the splash guard was just about dragging on the ground. They left all the bolts out of it. It was hanging by the hooks.

It took them about a half hour to get five new bolts from parts and put it on right.

I did end up with two new bumpers and a commitment to give them the truck back at the end of the lease.

thats too bad you didnt have a good experience with them... I am having the rear bumper rust problem popping up on my 08 as you mentioned to me in an earlier thread that i would be having. Next time i service it i am planning on bringing it to their attention! hope i dont have the same luck as you...
