If you can get yourself a cheap or free 75-80 4spd, use the early tcase and bolt it in. Later splitcase needs adapter for drum parking brake otherwise disc conversion or late model rear axle for parking brake.

Existing 4spd is wrong spline count for 1pc t-case.

Crossbar on chassis doesn't need to move, not even with 5spd and splitcase.

5spd, splitcase and parking brake on splitcase does require bar to move back.

I just did this last week.
Thanks, Nate!! Makes a lot of sense! I will see what I can find. Might give you a ring and see what you have been up to!

Cool truck and project. My favorite color. I like the patina. I am also working on a 71 40 spring green truck. Very similar than yours. Put the 2F in it. Good luck keep going.
Thank you!! Can't wait to give the patina some deep love! That's awesome, you have a spring green truck as well!

Okay, guys, I might need some input... It will depend on a couple of things for me.

So I have two transmission/T-case & bellhousing setups I can do.

Option 1: OG 3 speed (on the tree) Solid case.
Pros:
I have all the linkage, bolts up, keep the e-brake setup, no fabrication. Clears the original bench seat.
Cons: Three on the tree? I dont mind but I know people hate on it.

Option 2: h42 4 speed and split case.

Pros: Newer 4-speed, floor shifting, smooth as butter. Split case is easy to rebuild.
Cons: I didn't move the rear cross bar. Custom fab to shorten the trans support, T case needs to be rebuilt.

Considerations:

This will not be a trail rig, mostly around town and for fun trips! I want to get everything cleaned up and dropped in so I can start driving it now.
If we love it, we will probably motor swap in the future! (Maybe a Toyota diesel or newer 4.0 out of a Tacoma.)

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but swapping the gearbox and t-case would require new driveshafts as well, no? Not a huge deal necessarily, but it means extra $$ and it can be a hassle if the flanges on the later driveshafts have a different hole spacing than your early pinion flanges.

So you are correct! Flanges make things sucks, but it's not the end of the world. I have FJ40 and FJ60 driveshafts lying around that I can send off to get rebuilt. Or just send all the info to Woody and go custom like I did on my 60 series.

Honest, I was fully expecting to do custom, or at a minimum, send mine off to get rebuilt.

Snow is killing me a little bit. But can't wait to get these 35x10.5s mounted up! Got the rollers off the FJ60 wheels.

Busted out some iron remover, 0000 steel wool, and some chrome polish! Crazy how well these wheels clean up. Reminds me of when I first got my 60 series! I think they will look wonderful! for now! Happy Thanksgiving! (Now I have to wait until next week to get them mounted!)

Back home. Got the tires mounted, just in time for Christmas Card Photos. I wanted to take them with the 60, but Lauren wanted them with the 40! I need to install the lift on asap, before the weather turns again.

Had an hour, so started pulling the front axle to swap in the new suspension.

If it's not going to snow in the west, I guess I can keep working in the driveway!

Progress! Always love the patina! get yours done and lets go on a trip!!
Just need to keep plugging away on it like you!! Can't wait to take this on a trip! What a feeling!
This is a solid looking 40! What part of SW Colorado are you from? We lived in Montrose for a long time and we have a cabin in the valley north of the Rio Grand Reservoir. You can still drive to the cabin, which is insane.
I am from Pagosa Springs! So other side of the mountains from Montrose as the crow flies! That's a beautiful spot!! When was the last time you made it out there?
Those badland jacks are so much nicer than your standard old 80lb floor jack with steel wheels. They are worth every penny! This 40 is going to look so good.
Dude, this jack is a workhorse! I've done so much stuff with it. Are you going out to King of the Hammers at all this year?
