Well, I am back!! A full year later, I am getting ready to take the 40 out of storage and move it 750 miles with me. Going through the top and chasing bolts. I really want to get a new one from Classic Cruisers, but they are out of stock currently and were under the gun! Maybe next visit!

Bolted the seats in for the drive. Missing parts for the driver's side, if anyone has the mounts lying around! Cool to see as I got it bare bones. Dreaming of redoing them!

Got the top to line back up again for bolting it down with some creative strapping.

Loaded it up with more parts for the journey home. This is not even close to half of it.
 
Time to stab in the 2F and bellhousing for transportation. I really love how easy 40s are—just fun legos.

Nothing a snatch block and a winch can't do! That was really easy to load onto the trailer. Makes me want to add a rear winch to the Cummins. I'll put the bib and hood back on in the morning and strap everything down for the 800-mile journey. Not looking forward to the drive, but happy to have the 40 at my new home.

Great looking project!

I’m sure you know this already but I didn’t before, a dab of anti seize on the stainless hardware will help keep them from freezing up once installed.
Do you know if it's the same issue with silver zinc-plated bolts? I didn't do stainless for that reason.
 
I don’t think they need it, but it couldn’t hurt. I just assumed the bolt kits were stainless, I didn’t look close enough. 🫤
There was stainless garbage on my last 40. And I cursed each nasty bolt I had to remove! Ill add some anti-seize! I chase all my threads. Time consuming but these bolts go in with ease!
 
Okay, guys, I might need some input... It will depend on a couple of things for me.

So I have two transmission/T-case & bellhousing setups I can do.

Option 1: OG 3 speed (on the tree) Solid case.
Pros:
I have all the linkage, bolts up, keep the e-brake setup, no fabrication. Clears the original bench seat.
Cons: Three on the tree? I dont mind but I know people hate on it.

Option 2: h42 4 speed and split case.

Pros: Newer 4-speed, floor shifting, smooth as butter. Split case is easy to rebuild.
Cons: I didn't move the rear cross bar. Custom fab to shorten the trans support, T case needs to be rebuilt.

Considerations:

This will not be a trail rig, mostly around town and for fun trips! I want to get everything cleaned up and dropped in so I can start driving it now.
If we love it, we will probably motor swap in the future! (Maybe a Toyota diesel or newer 4.0 out of a Tacoma.)

If you're swapping something else in down the road, no point in all the extra fab work now. Keep it simple and chuck the solid case/three speed in there and drive the f***er!

That's basically what I want to hear!
 
If you can get yourself a cheap or free 75-80 4spd, use the early tcase and bolt it in. Later splitcase needs adapter for drum parking brake otherwise disc conversion or late model rear axle for parking brake.

Existing 4spd is wrong spline count for 1pc t-case.

Crossbar on chassis doesn't need to move, not even with 5spd and splitcase.

5spd, splitcase and parking brake on splitcase does require bar to move back.

I just did this last week.
