i bent some hoops last night for Alf's m416 trailer so he can put a rooftop tent on it.

when i go to make the second bend, i absolutly make sure that everything is level using a 4' bubble level.
but about half way thru the second bend, it take a dive on me, goes off level.
thru the first two pulls, as i pull i have to tighten up the set screw that holds the tube.
i know when this happens that the tube is not rotating, my marks tell me this.

why does the tube do this?

should i have the tube supported thats hanging out away from the bender while i'm bending the other corner?

this NOT a good thing :crybaby:

HEEEEEEEEEEEEELP

please

You need to support the other end. That is very important.

Set up a little jig to keep it positioned the way you want it to be.

I used a ladder system similar to a HF press when I did my cage. It allowed me to position the material at the necessary height.

BTW, the set screw is more of an initial thing. It really does not do much once you start a bend..

is it the little bit of friction/heat generated by the pull that does this?
i was using one of my 10 ton jack stands, but not at the right spot :frown:

thanx jason

I always support the hanging end of steel when I bend tube. In addition I put a level on it.
I have been trying to devise an A frame bench that would mount my JD2 #3 bender vertically...not horizontally. I think vertical mounting would contribute to better bends. The plan would be to do a hydraulic arm on the bench too. But that is another thread.
