Hey guys. I have a squeak coming from the rear axle area underneath my 2000 LC that I can't clearly identify. It really becomes noticeable above 40-50 mph and increases in frequency with speed from there. But as you'll see in the 2nd video, I'm now hearing something at slower speeds. At high speed it sounds like a metallic "ticking" sound. (maybe that's that's just a very fast squeak) And since it seems to increase/decrease according to speed, it's likely the fainter sound is the same squeak. It sounds just about as loud through both side windows as I'm driving. If it were a rear wheel bearing, I would expect it to be louder on the one side with the bad bearing.
I heard something somewhere about the rear axle bearings being stout enough to last the life of the vehicle. Now I can't really believe that, but could they BOTH need replacing at 180k miles? Being that I can't identify the side that the sound is coming from, I also thought about it being a central rotating component. But I don't think that's a U-joint sound. Right? A pinion bearing? It's more towards the rear rather than the front, so nothing in the transfer case- I expect.
Thank for the suggestions.
