When I got a hold of my truck (1989 FJ62), I took it for a spin on the highway to see how it would do. Did just fine, but would only go around 60-65 miles an hour, it was at 2000-2400rpm's or so, and I didnt want to push it. Its got a stock engine with a 2" lift and 33's. Since everything is pretty much stock, I would guess thats as fast as the truck will go. Re-gear would of course change that, but thats expensive....:bang:
Thoughts?

Thanks

I know you do not want to hear this but re- gear. Now if you buy the kits and do it yourself its considerably cheaper. Are you sure the rig is running like it should? By all means cruisers are not fast

I can get my cruiser above the speeds you mentioned but I don't do it for long because just like you said, the RPM's get past 3,000 and I don't like doing that for long. I usually crusie at 60 to 65 at 2,000 to 2,300 and get 17 mpg. Once you get into the 3,000 rpm range the gas mileage goes significantly down to 9 mpg.

Get a rubber overgear (i.e. 33" tires) or regear.

This is going to be a problem for some time to come. I'm a highschool kid, couldnt install myself.:crybaby:
Everything is running great, havnt noticed one thing that has faltered. And I know Cruisers are by no means fast, I'm not trying to make mine fast, but I would think it should at least be able to go faster than 60 or so.

P.S. how much would a re-gear cost if I did it myself somehow versus taking it to a shop to get done?

The gearing isn't the problem, you already have 4:10's since it's a 62 and lots of us run 33's with that setup. I can exceed 100mph with pretty much the same setup you have. I suspect your tranny is the issue.

Is that your measured speed or the "speedometer" speed. 33 inch tires are oversized so you are probably going faster than the speedometer says. Note: forget about going 100mph.. that is the last thing you want to do with your rig. If it don't get you killed or ticketed, it could push your engine and drivetrain over the edge and you will end up walking.

The 33's will read approx. 10% slower than actual speed but he's still running too slow for that setup.

The 100mph was not a suggestion I'm sure, rather a point of reference.

Tune up? Rubber re-gear?

So since I've got 33's and the speedo says I'm going 60 or so I'm probably going 8-10mph faster? So my truck can actually go a decent traveling speed...yeehaw:hillbilly:. Place to get my speedo corected....?

Thanks guys

stock tires are 27. You have 33. More like 15 per cent speedo error. No problem running a 3FE *what you have ) closer to 3000 rpm, but you won't be doin that at 70 or 75. If you really want performance, fit a smaller tire.

So my truck can really go about 70. :D I'm not looking for permformance, I know that you cant throw at brick around that fast. How/Where would I get my speedo corrected?

Thanks

Cruiserparts.net recently started stocking speedo gears with different numbers of teeth, available in 16, 17, and 18 tooth versions? No affiliation

Once you get into the 3,000 rpm range the gas mileage goes significantly down to 9 mpg.

It's not the rpm that's the mpg killer it's the speed. Given a constant aerodynamic drag number, wind resistance increases as a square of velocity. For best mpg go just fast enough to get the t/c to lock up (~52 mph) and keep it steady. Aside from that, if you can't push 80-90 mph, something needs to be fixed in your truck.

i can get mine up to 75-80. probly faster but i don't try. my problem is the rpm's. at 65 mph i hit 3k on the tach.
