Hi,
I dont own a Hilux, but a Hiace from 1983 and I know they are similar. So this is why I am trying my luck here. My hiace as the 2,2L L engine (Diesel) with the superglow system. I am doing a frame-off restoration and have pulled the entire wire harness and now have the time to inspect all the electrical components.
I have two problems:
Charging voltage
1. My charging voltage is above 15V which is too much. It seems that engine speed influences the voltage. On the highway the voltage may rise to 15,5V ... in town a little less. Sometimes it drops to 13,5V for a while and rises again. Thus, it is not very stable. The charging voltage of my 1991 Corolla stays rock solid on 14,5V at all speeds. Sidenote: My voltage regulator is NOT in-built with the alternator. The voltage regulator is a single unit mounted below the dash panel. Explained differently voltage regulation takes place 3 feet away from the actual alternator. It is VERY difficult to trouble shoot the regulator while mounted because I have to basically remove the entire dash which will take maybe 2 hours. I opened the voltage regulator but everything looks fine. Does anyone know how to test that regulator and how does it work?
Preheating
2. When cold, my engine does not start very good. If I obey the glow plug timer (observe the light in the dash), then the engine will start extremely rough and shaky and will shake extremly bad for 10 seconds before it calms down and all cylinders fire normally. The car drives perfectly and has full power. When the engine is hot, I can start the engine with no problem. If I disobey the small glow plug light and keep preheating while counting 5-10 seconds, the engine starts perfectly with the crank making a ½ turn before it runs. The car does not smoke at all. All glow plugs have been changed but is doesn't remove the problem. I had a look at the glow plug timer and the glow plug relay but everything looks fine to me. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot these components?
Preheating timer:
And the glow plug relay:
I would like to be sure that these components don't show problems before I assemble everything again below the dash. Compared to a Hilux it is REALLY a pain to reach all the parts once installed.
Thanks in advance,
Lucas
