After driving a co-workers FJC, decided I "needed" one in the garage. Called all over Colorado to see what was available. Found a silver, auto, pkg 2, rock rails, etc..loaded, in Colorado Springs. Salesman quoted me MSRP of 32k. I thought it would be an easy deal, no trade, etc...looked good right up to the $995 "paint protection". Told the salesman an emphatic "NO"

. I would have more respect for them if they just flat out said MSRP plus a grand. Oh well, someone said that the chase was as much fun as the capture...not sure that it applies here!
Same thing happened to me Thursday with a non-Toyota vehicle.
$1499 paint protection and "trip interuption assistance."
Salesman "All our cars have it."
Me "But I don't want it."
Salesman "What if your car breaks down on a trip and you need me assistance."
Me "Is this car going to break down on me a lot?"
Salesman "All our cars have it"
Grrrr.
In my experience all you have to do is tell them you won't pay it, they'll figure out a way to take it off.
I used to do "Pro-Paks" for a Ford dealership I worked at, it was basically undercoating, scotch guard on the seats and carpet (or leather conditioner and scotch guard if there was a leather interior), and polymer paint seal. Took about 2 hours to do, and they charged something like $1500 for it. Many of the salesmen at the dealership would tip me if they actually got someone to pay for the package.
An example is when I bought a 2003 Ford Ranger FX4, there was a $450 "dealer processing fee" tacked on and I flat out said "I'm not paying for that" and the salesman just scratched it off the price right then and there.
So basically, say no and see what happens, if they won't sell it to you forget it, you can find a dealer who will.

Exactly what I did. Told them a very emphatic "NO". The reply was "too bad, these are hard to come by". Eventually I will find a dealer with one that I want at a "reasonable?" price. Waiting patiently....NOT!
Where to buy

It sounds like you guys need to check out some dealers in Texas. Through my experience I called and went to a few dealers in San Antonio and Austin. The ones in Austin were trying to sell them for $1500 over sticker. The dealers in San Antonio were fair. One dealer specifically blew my buying experience away. Universal Toyota was the most direct and easy deal that I made and I didn't even walk through the door of their dealership untill my FJ arrived. I did everything over the phone with the salesperson/fleet manager Shannon Witherow. No Bull S#(* or anything that usually goes along with car salespeople. I ordered it and he had it there for me within 2 weeks. I walked in the door, all the paperwork was ready and I was driving away withing 20 minuites with my new FJ. I got the exact options that I wanted, no protection packages or Bull s*#@ that most dealers were adding for. If you want to buy a FJ you need to give this buy a call. Very professional and what a Car Salesperson should be like. If you are wanting to buy one see this guy-Shannon Witherow 210-654-1515. Super professional guy.
