The EGR is definitely closed. My exhaust flange bolts were quite loose, I tightened them up. The rough idle seems unchanged although I’m still waiting for it to warm up properly.

Did it get quieter when you tightened the flange bolts?

I’ve identified a couple of vacuum leaks to fix, including a pretty good one around the carb insulator (time to put those gaskets in). I’ll fix those, readjust timing, and readjust idle speeds and see where that gets me. Does the video seem at all consistent with a vacuum leak?

rough running is very likely a vacuum leak. The loud popping noise sounded like exhaust to me.

I have four things I want to tackle soon and I’m trying to avoid doing all of them at the same time... but they all involve getting the truck up on stands.

* Tie rod ends
* Brake pads
* Suspension
* Knuckle rebuild

I’m sure I need to do the knuckle rebuild but it also seems like the most likely candidate to put off a bit longer. Would anyone strongly recommend doing it along with everything else?

LOL, I did all of those when my 60 was up on stands

I thought I’d do brake pads and tie rod ends tonight but you all know how that’s going...

I got one side replaced just fine, once I got the pistons pressed in far enough. The other side (the opposite side of my brake pull) is not going well. I managed to get one pad out but the other is very stuck. Not sure if the pistons are bad or if the pad was just allowed to wear too far but I can’t find a way to create any separation. Any ideas?

EDIT: I managed to get the stuck pad removed but 1 of the 2 pistons on that side is super stuck. It may just be over-extended due to excessive pad wear... what’s the easiest way to get it to pop back in? I’d rather not buy two new calipers because 1/8 pistons is stuck. 😅

channel locks usually work.

Was going to mention to be careful if using channel locks they could damage the pistons and make them leak or stick.

Today I met @NookShneer and traded some parts (hi Dave 👋), picked up my OME heavy kit from @torfab (004 front and back), painted my new TREs (just to prove I can full-ass SOMETHING), and installed new brake calipers and pads. I’m hoping to get the truck off jack stands tomorrow. The lift will have to go on soon because I have nowhere to store these springs. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Are OME CS004R A/B springs supposed to have 9 total springs? I see 7 in stage one and 2 overload. Maybe there’s an extra leaf on these?

Getting it done. Nice work on the TRE’s I missed the paint part and they look sad and rusty.

Thanks @NookShneer! That’s a lot of springs for a stock truck but I think I’ll stick with it. They do look pretty broken-in and @lechnito’s OME install thread makes me think it’ll look great.

Today I installed the TREs, bled the brakes, and drove the truck again. I also found the source of a bad rattle... my AC idler pulley. I loosened some tension on the AC belt and that fixed it for now.

I drove out onto the highway tonight for the first time since the engine swap and it felt really good. I need an alignment after the TRE swap but it’s pretty great to have responsive steering and no brake pull!

Today marks three months since I brought Treebeard home. Just to toot my own horn and to get a head start on a real maintenance log... here’s what I’ve done in that time.

  • Cleaned up moss and dirt inside and out
  • Replaced front side markers
  • Replaced tail light lenses (then broke one)
  • Replaced tailgate light bezel
  • Replaced rear passenger window lever
  • Replaced choke cable and knob
  • Replaced locking gas cap with OEM
  • Removed, washed, and reinstalled seat upholstery
  • Shampooed carpets
  • Added Lloyd’s floor mats
  • Cleaned and straightened up rear cargo panels
  • Swapped 292k 2F with a 166k 2F (including alternator, PS pump, AC compressor, starter, coil, carb, exhaust)
  • Cut my fan shroud in half
  • Drained, dropped, cleaned, and reinstalled gas tank
  • New oil, coolant, PS fluid (ATF)
  • New TREs
  • New front brake calipers and pads

Coming soon...
  • OME heavy install
  • LED interior and backup lights
  • Knuckle rebuild
  • Change all gear oil

Thanks to everyone on this forum for all of your help! I was not a wrench-turner three months ago and I have learned so much from you all since then. Special shout-outs to @Jonathan Faunce and @NookShneer for lending me their space, tools, and answering many many questions. Cheers to many more miles for our cruisers. 🍻
