I sanded, rust converted, and painted a spare tire carrier that I picked up from @NookShneer and this was all I could think about while bolting it in.

I'm having to use starter fluid pretty regularly to get Treebeard to start after sitting overnight and I'm confident that it's a fuel delivery issue. Should there be fuel in the sight glass on the carb, even if the truck sits for 24 hours? At one point when I parked the truck I could actually hear fuel draining back into the tank (I opened the rear hatch to listen). Is this normal?

You should see fuel about halfway up in the site glass even when the truck has been sitting over night. Fuel returning to the tank is probably not a big deal but is your carb leaking/draining is the bigger question.

thinking out loud.

when you do have it started and under heavy load does it falter?

I’m wondering if you fuel pump diaphragm is not fully functional. Allowing fuel to gravity feed back down after shutdown.

I think you would also notice it shudder or faulted under high load (pedal all the way down)

Nope no shudder or faltering. I climbed up a steep hill into West Seattle this afternoon and it's running smoothly with the pedal down. It actually did the draining thing today... with the rear of the truck slightly downhill from the front. Very clear sounds of fluid draining and air backfilling... glug glug glug.

the gurgling is commonly a sign of the Charcoal canister either not functioning or some evap parts not working right.

check to see if you have the lines to the charcoal canister hooked up correctly.

I’m still thinking that the lack of fuel indicates an issue with the fuel pump. You can try and prime it the next time to determine if that is the issue. That would involve pouring fuel into the line attached to the carb and letting it flow down into the fuel pump.

so that the pump isn’t pumping air and has something to “push” up to the carb.

@NookShneer the charcoal canister lines are hooked up to match FSM. I have never moved them and I don’t get any “woosh” when opening the cap. Yesterday, after the truck sat for 24 hours, I cranked the engine with the intention of filling the bowl and it very nearly fired up on the first crank. The front of the truck was parked slightly lower this time...

No progress on the starting problem other than being careful to park it with the nose downhill for now.

In other news, I found a small shop just a couple of blocks from me that advertises "frame repair" as one of their services. I took it in to have them work on the worst bit of my frame. Not bad for $275!

This past week @Jonathan Faunce and I got his rear springs swapped (no more lean) and got the rear portion of my OME install finished. The stinkbug is STRONG but the ride improvement is already incredible. I also bought some 33” BFG AT tires that I’ll get mounted and balanced this week!

Also, Treebeard has been starting very reliably with the warm weather we’ve been having. 😅

I realized recently that my carb fan doesn't work. Poking around mud a bit I realized that I have the thermosensor for it in the shed... is it possible that fixing the carb fan will resolve my fuel-in-carb problem? As in... maybe the fuel in the carb is vaporizing after the truck turns off because the fan isn't keeping the carb cool? Maybe this would even improve my fuel economy?

Lets just say it won't hurt. Don't know if it will solve your current problem but it won't create any new ones.

Should help with hot starts. Cold starts might help a bit. You’ll want to ground the wire that goes to the thermistor and it’ll run for 20 mins after each key on. It doesn’t draw enough to be a worry about draining the batteries. There are threads about people wiring in bathroom fan timers to have better control over the fan.

Hahaha I tried plugging in that thermosensor and now the truck won’t start. It doesn’t even crank. I doubt it’s the sensor itself, I’ve suspected electrical shenanigans in that part of the engine bay and I probably just bumped a bundle the wrong way. This will be fun.

lol nevermind I left the lights on. Has anyone ever done a mod that made the truck continue to beep when the lights are left on? Seems important.

I think @KeilOver did this mod
