I just sent in a set of Birfields to be treated by Bobby Long. Terra said they no longer weld on the ring because in Bobby's experience it actually caused more harm to the bell than they were worth.

Does anyone have any experience with the new treated longs? Are they as strong as the original treated longs?

the reason they no longer weld the rings on is because most people did not adjust the steering stops properly and that caused the balls to hit the ring and begin to distort the case.

From what I understand they really did not lose much strength by not adding the rings.

Bob is getting a set of ringless longs.. I would not even think twice about it.

30 spline long kit, and forget about it....


Anything else, and you will be changing out parts in the future to install these anyhow....


Do it now, and be done with it.

I kinda doubt that the sockers will break without a front locker..

I've witnessed a stock turdfield break WITH THE STARTER MOTOR!

I've personally broken a stock turdfield in a STOCK 1972 FJ40 (open-open, 3spd, 33" tires, F engine.)

I've personally broken a stock turdfield with 31" tires and an ARB.

If you must run a stock front end get the Longfield 30 spline super set and be done with it. You'll be happy you did.

And the next time you're replacing whatever else you put in there you'll regret you didn't.

Just trashed a Longfield at Tellico last weekend,

27 spline set of chromos and long's.

I bought them a few months before the 30 spline came out. I wish I had waited.

Anything can and will fail.....welcome to the klub.



Comparing 27 spline longs with stock or chromo inners to 30 spline longs with chromo inners is not apples to apples as there are a number of design changes/updates that have occured with the 30 spline set ups.


Pretty sure that the 30 spline chromo sets have yet to be broke....

I bought a set of cromo 30 splines , put them in a week ago , will test them friday, i broke a stock one [ corse spline] at last years cruise moab with 33". then i broke a fine spline with 35" s. hopefully i should never break another one.
