I am in desperate need of a front locker as ive already had a lot of times when i should have been crawl something but have needed to power over it and its not really my style and my sheetmetal isnt enjoying it.

With all the weight of my 62 i want to upgrade my birfs before i lock it up, but i CANNOT afford chromo longs. What i want to know is which treated birfs are worth a s***? Ive heard from several people that the profields are dog****, ive heard some good things about the smurfields but im not sure they are being made right now, and the treated longs are supposedly gone as well but ive heard a couple people say bobby will still do them if you ask nicely. So whats worth the money (if any of them are)?

Run your current axleshafts. They will last a while with just 34s and the stock engine.

Thats what some people say, and then others say youll be breaking every trip with the stockers. I personally think if i take it easy and let the auto spool up slowly and dont shock it i could make them last but id like to have a little insurance.

They will last a while in a fj40 with 16/35 boggers as long as you dont hammer on it, so they should be fine with your tires. I wouldnt spend any money on them until you can get the chromoly shafts and birfs. That is my opinion.

i ran a front locker with stock birfs and 33s for 3 years before i broke a birfield. Just grab a stock one for cheap as a spare and go wheelin. dont worry about it.

x2...tearing down a front end doesnt take long after you do it a time or 10.

Thats just what i needed to hear. Ive already got a set of spares (birf and both inners) so i think im just gonna bite the bullet on an aussie soon.

There's a place in central MA that does cryo-treating.

Wth?

Yeah i just wasnt sure what section to put it in so i figured it would get the most views here. If a mod wants to move it to a more appropriate section please do, id still like to know if smurfs are any good or if bobby really does still treat birfs. Ive done the knuckles so i know how to pull a birf but that doesnt mean i really want to.

Does anyone on here have any experience with the smurfields? The thread on pirate seemed to recommend them well and they would cost less than a hundred bucks. I dont have the money to keep popping stockers and buying new spares at 50 a pop.

Sorta a hijack, but same question essentially.

38" XLs on stock 80 series birfs no locker...how urgent are Longs and chromoly inners?

I did alot of rockcrawling in my old Toyota Hilux and everything was fine w/ the stock birfs and lockers till I went from 33s to 35s. They still held up pretty well w/ 35s as long as I was easy. The minute the beer started flowing all went south.:D

Call Bobby and see if he still treats stock birfs..

Unlocked im sure you be fine if ya dont wheel like an ass. Heres how it plays out for the most part....if your an east coaster where there is rocks with mud and dirt, tight trails where there is moisture and slimy decomposing crap on the trail lowering traction you'll be o so fine.

If ya live in the west coast where there is oodles and oodles of traction you could probably pop a birf with 33s.

Now I am not saying you wont break something, I am just saying its doubtful.

I ran 35s locked up front for a while before I broke anything, I have 1st gen longs up front now with 37s and Ill doubt they will last either.

I hit it hard last year at GSMTR but it rained all week, I was fully locked on 37s and did not break til the end of the week on guardrail (birf), thats all after lower and upper 2 4,5,6 and 11, slickrock....etc etc...

Traction = Breakage...

Hi All:

Just send in your stock Birfs to Bobby Long and he will send you a pair of his "treated" Birfs.

He still treats stock 1979+ Birfields. I just installed about six weeks ago a pair of "treated" mini-truck Birfs and an Aussie Locker in the front of my FJ40. On a trail run 3 weeks ago it was great having a front 'locker to climb wet rocks! Gonna "test" the front 'locker some more this weekend! :grinpimp:

Regards,

Alan

How much did they run you alan?
