On my 2000 LC I have plain Corolla key and a remote from a member here. I removed the chip from my old key and glued it to the back of the ignition switch cover. Works perfectly. Well I was out of town and my wife needed my truck. Of course she couldn't find my regular key. So she got my spare factory key. It wouldn't start. So she found the regular key and no issue. I get back home and sure enough the Corolla key works, the old key with the empty shell works, but the factory key with remote and transponder intact does not. I found it interesting so I thought I would post it. So FYI if you glue the transponder chip to the ignition you can only use the key that is paired with that chip.

Your Corolla key is not paired to the old chip that you glued to the ignition cover. The reason for your problem is the car will not start with more than one chip within the detecting region.
