It will work,but the transmission shifter would't line up in the hole , I think they are at diiferent location, the shifter for the case will line up I think. I maybe wrong, someone will correct me

04/85 and earlier.... 05/85 and later is a longer assembly and will require drive shaft modifications, just for starters...and as mentioned above, the shifter cane location in the top cover is not going to line up with the opening in the 83-40 series floor.
