In my FJ62 It seems that whenever I get onto the freeway and I shift from 3rd to 4th, it'll stay in 4th for a half second and then drop about 200 rpms into what I believe is over drive.

It seems like I can't really be in 4th without going into overdrive. Is this normal?

Sometimes going up a grade on teh freeway, I need more power but it doesnt go from over drive to 4th, instead it goes automatically into 3rd witha big jolt and revving to about 3400 which I don't think the engine likes.

Would adjusting the tranny kick down cable help?
Where exactly is this tranny kick down cable, I looked in the fsm and didn't see the exact term.

I used to be a Honda guy.. My old car redlines at 8000 rpms and is as smooth up there as it is at 3000 rpms.
How are these engines? I know you guys refer them to tractor engines, but how high can I safely rev them to?

Any help would be appreciated.

You're experiencing the 4th gear "lock-up": when you reach 4th & the torque demand is not too great, the trans locks up to make it "direct drive", improving the mpg. When you demand more power, it unlocks & shifts to 3rd.

3400 rpm is no problem - probably shouldn't stay there for hours, though.

Your truck should go into 4th gear lock up aroung 53 mph. If your throttle cable (that's what it's called in the fsm) is properly adjusted, it'll downshift depending on the rpm and the throttle position. By design it will always downshift if the pedal is punched all the way. Your cable may be maladjusted or sticking; both are common.
