I bought an FJ40 with Fairey OD. I have since sold the Land Cruiser after removing the OD/transmission. When I went to place the OD/transmission onto my transmission jack, it slipped off and completely snapped the input shaft clean off.

So, I’ve spent the past week or so trying to remove this OD from the transmission. I removed the transfer case’s cover for better access to the OD’s gears and transmission output. There is ONE C Clip keeping the OD from separating from the transmission.

I’ve tried with the help of Fairey enthusiast John (livinginthepast) getting this separated. I’ve discovered that I cannot get to this C Clip from the transfer case’s opening. So, the only thing I know to do is to get to the C Clip by removing the transmission’s gears/input and output shaft. And trying to get to this clip from the transmission side.

Ive read where I need to remove the cluster gears and bearings to be able to accomplish this. I just need a little guidance on how to do that. Or, will this even help me ultimately get to that damn C clip?

Hello All, I was kinda’ disappointed that Dan didn’t get any responses form his request for help. Because of this, I texted Dan and between the 2 of us, one in Alabama and one in Washington, we figured it out…lots of pictures, lots of conversation, lots of detail, that will be lost to others if the issue comes up again.

Bottom line is that a 3 speed transmission can be removed from a 3 speed Transfer Case that includes a Fairey overdrive WITHOUT removing or disassembling the overdrive. The Transmission is removed by opening up the back cover of the Fairey and removing the Transmission tail shaft lock nut, washer and main nut, then remove the 5 bolts that hold the Transfer Case to the Transmission….then slide the 2 units apart…..it’s that easy my friends…assembly is the reverse.

I’m just glad I could help.
