How do I check to see if my breather tube is clogged? Do I have to remove it from the tranny or is there a way to tell with it still attached. It's hard enough to get my hand above the tranny, not sure how I would take it off. Right now the tube is just hanging down along side the transmission, is that right? Any insight is appreciated. jeff

The transmission breather tube should hook into the dipstick tube part way up.

I had to replace the tube/hose recently... here is a thread with pics of where the hose meets the dipstick and the top of the transmission.

The transmission hump needs removed to access the top of the transmission.

Hope we're talking about the same thing...

Yep, that's it. Thanks

Can I test its function ability without taking the elbow out, does it normally create pressure or vacuum?

I have tranny fluid leaking into the t-case so I wanted to see if this may be the cause.

I have read about this happening in several threads... searched a bit and can't find the threads now but I believe the problem is the seal between the transmission and tcase not the breather hose.

x2 I am starting to suspect mine (I always thought it was just with the manuals....) but haven't had a chance to check closer yet.

The breather tube fitting on top of the transmission is not that tight of a fit. Even if the breather tube were plugged, I would think air could escape around the fitting. And even if the breather tube is clogged which then forced transmission fluid into the transfer case, your seal is toast, so you are going to be replacing the seal regardless.

There is a breather on top or the transfer case too. If you are getting fluid up the speedo cable, I would think that's the culprit. But doesn't explain why you have ATF in the transfer. Looks like you have multiple issues with fluid migrating....

I checked on OpenX and see the breather plug, I didn't see a hose along with it though. So do you guys think its easier to just drop the tranny and t-case and go from there? How hard is it to fix the seal between the the two? Do I still have to disassemble the t-case if I remove them from the truck?
