So i installed my rear case housing and everything was torque'd to spec and as i was torqueing down my rear bearing retainer..i hear a pop and then my rear case housing just cracked!! I couldn't believe it. I was taking my time and going exactly by the book and then this happened. I was so excited that i was almost done and BAM!! I get to start over from scratch.

So i have some questions. Why did it crack as i torqueing down the rear bearing retainer? Did it have to do with my rear output shaft assembly? Everything looked and seemed right. I don't understand!

Also, now i have to get a transfer case. From what years can i use one from that will fit a 1990 Fj62?

This day truely sux!!! But live and learn.

Thanks Guys. I'll post pics soon.

Sounds like the bearing was not seated fully.

Take some pics and we can walkya through it.

At least you do not need a whole case. the rear bearing retainer shoudl not be hard to find by itself..

What exactly broke? It sounds like something in the ouput assembly was not in properly, and when you torqued down the bolts, something had to give. I'm very sorry, that had to be a disappointment.

I would also wonder if the idler thrust bearing slipped out of it's notch.

All you really need is the part that broke, but I would use the same case-ie if it was originally behind an automatic (FJ62) I would use one of the same. Otherwise any t-case 84 up will work, and possibly 82-83. The linkage will be the challenge.

Please post pics so we can all suffer with you....:crybaby:

It was the rear t-case cover that cracked...not the rear bearing retainer.

Mace like you said...the bearing but not of seated correctly. The rear case cover went on perfect as well as everything else. I am going to tear it down tomorrow and see what i can find out. I'll post pics of the tear down so ya'll can see.

THanks

Jason

Here are some pics of the cracked rear case cover. As you can see all the cracking occured around the rear output shaft assembly area which makes me think it wasn't seated correctly.

Also notice the very clean t-case :-(

Nice carnage..

Just because Murphy Seems to be riding my ass at all times I always snug things down during reassembly with a small wrench. That way if it starts to bind I will really feel it.

If, after it is fairly well snugged I see room between the parts, I dissassemble things to see what happened.

That really sucks..

BTW, if you decide to swap cases I might be interested in that cases guts. The late 60 and 62 cases actually have a lower gearset in them..

But it souds like cali60 has you covered for just the outside portion of the case..
